Personal Narrative: The Smoke Detector Campaign

Ever since I was little I have been involved in 4-H. This program has taught me how to be responsible, organized and a leader by allowing children like myself to be active in their communities. Every year we are required to do a certain amount of voluntary work. I have volunteered at many local events, such as 4-H Fair Clean Up Day, JucFest, Sod Buster and Ethan’s Rodeo. This summer, I was given the privilege to give back to my community in a huge way. Normally, my volunteer opportunities assist a few people or animals, but this opportunity affected an entire village. This would not have been possible if it was not for Red Cross and United Way. They teamed up to create an event called “The Smoke Detector Campaign”. I was given the opportunity to notify and install smoke detectors in resident’s homes for free. The people from Red Cross explained how many people die from not …show more content…
An older couple, which has lived in the community nearly all of their life, was overjoyed when they fully understood what I was doing and for whom I was volunteering. They could not believe that the smoke detector and the installation were free. While I was explaining their escape plan, they both kept asking me questions about the campaign. Talking to this older couple helped me comprehend how much people were appreciating this campaign. After installing all of the smoke detectors that were provided for us, my team congregated with the members of Red Cross and United Way to tally up the total amount of residents we served. The campaign leaders predicted that we would assist about one hundred community members. We found out that we actually provided around two hundred and fifty families with smoke detectors. This experience has made me eager to keep volunteering. It has inspired me to start volunteering at the Quincy Humane Society. I cannot wait to see what the volunteering world has in store for

Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

Today, my youngest brother, my nephew and I volunteered at an event coordinated by United for Puerto Rico, in Arlington, Virginia. As we arrived at the location, we were greeted by the sight of a large Puerto Rican flag, a large crowd of volunteers and the blaring sound of Salsa music. We handed our donated items, signed in and received instructions. My brother and my nephew helped with loading boxes onto trucks and I helped with packing and labeling boxes. The event was well-planned and organized.…

Introduction I’ll never forgot the plaque hanging in my childhood home with a famous Muhammad Ali quote that states, “service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” My parents, Michael and Karen Clavin, specifically placed this sign on the wall of our entrance hall so that it was visible soon as soon as we entered our home. They raised my three brothers and me to always take the opportunity to help others who were in need through service work. In the year 2007, we began volunteering at Nashville’s Room in the Inn every Thursday as a family.…

One in five veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. One of the best remedies for veterans who suffer from PTSD is animal therapy. For my sixteenth birthday party, I asked that my guest bring donations or animal supplies, instead of birthday gifts to donate to the A.N.N.A. Shelter in Erie that supports Pets for Vets. The A.N.N.A. Shelter works with Pets for Vets in order to pair animals with service members who have PTSD. I managed to raise a few hundred dollars for Pets for Vets and received many bowls, treats, toys, and so forth for the animals.…

There is one particular experience which undoubtedly brought to light the idea that many people face daily struggles. This encounter occurred when I helped treat an eight-year-old, autistic boy. The child was nonverbal, and arrived with a persistent fever of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. As an autistic child, he was easily stimulated by sensory perception, and also struck with fear from having his temperature taken. Regrettably, we had several other things we needed to do for him.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

As I ponder on the possibilities of volunteering my options seem infinite. Thousands of agencies supply help through disasters whether that being protecting endangered animals, assisting communities suffering through a time of shock, or aid for families who are individually facing times of adversity. In my search for an agency, I wanted to find somewhere I could begin volunteering today. The American National Red Cross provides me with this best opportunity to start volunteering now. Deciding to volunteer for The American National Red Cross, I considered the thousands of lives they reach each year, the ability to gain experience while volunteering, and the reaping of long term benefits.…

I volunteered over night with my friend, Lauren, at the ECHO homeless shelter in Atascadero. Many students had negative comments on their volunteer experience, claiming that it was very boring and they felt as if they had not actually helped. Lauren and I took it upon ourselves to bring ice cream and water melon slices to pass out to the residents so we could introduce ourselves and establish a connection to hopefully avoid being bystanders like my other classmates. I was prepared to help the shelter workers and do small tasks like serving food and monitoring rooms, but after orientation the workers handed us a master key and informed us that we would be the sole regulators at the shelter.…
