Personal Narrative: The San Gorgonio Wilderness

Superior Essays
There is nothing more rewarding than sitting around a campfire in the mountains, after a day of backpacking, especially in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, drinking coffee and telling or listening to stories about all of our adventures we have had together. Yearly we got together to set our monthly backpacking schedule into the local mountains, and then a week in the Sierra, with our teenagers. Which of course, always includes The San Gorgonio Wilderness in the spring. It is rare to find so much compatibility in a group like ours, and most important there is always safety in numbers, which we all recognized, as we shall see. We adults always talked through all decisions we encountered. We all live in Costa Mesa and all the daughters and eventually the teenagers knew each other from Middle School and High School. When in the mountains expect the unexpected. San Gorgonio 11,503 feet and San Jacinto 10,834 feet, stand guard as the gateway to Los Angeles, flanking Interstate 10 (the San Gorgonio pass) facing eastward ten miles northwest of Palm Springs. As we headed for the fork in the trail, we encountered a man sitting by himself. He had been with a Boy Scout Troop, and he could not keep up with the boys. At this height we were sure it was the altitude, he was settling in for them to return the next day. We invited him to join us at our campsite. By turning us down, he was going to have a long, lonely night. He should have accepted our invitation, because the next morning we had a breakfast (prepared on Friday night, by Gale and Tim) of scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon. These were placed in plastic baggies, and heated up in boiling water on our backpack stoves. Now that was good

I remember an incident that was indicative of the extent to which the American administration at Camp Cooke was willing to go to satisfy us. On Friday or Saturday afternoons, we received from the food commissary on the main post freshly sliced meat or cutlets. On one occasion, the cooks in our company feigned great anger and refused to accept the meat that was delivered. They said they were planning a meal that required a different type of beef. About an hour later, the Americans replaced the meat with the requested type.…

Question 6 During my volunteer work at Cornerstone Ranch and Rescue, I learned that physics could be applied to any aspect of everyday life. This has helped me solidify my understanding of physics and eager to learn more. The realization of how physics is everywhere has sparked my interest to want to learn more physics in order to get a better understanding of how and why the world works the way it does. The property owner related many concepts of horseback riding and ranch work with physics-related ideas so that I could relate them to a science-based mindset.…

Once everyone got situated, they brought over the guy that we would be carrying all the way up the mountain. His name was Brad, he had a bad knee, and he was almost 300 pounds. Right then we knew that it was not going to be a cake walk walking all the way up the mountain. But we were still in high spirt; we knew that we were changing this kid’s life by helping him hike a mountain. They assistants and instructors came over and started to strap Brad in his harness.…

The Great Smoky Mountains I had never smelt the mountains before. When I was planning my trip everyone who had been there before said, “Oh, that smell! You’ll never forget it!”. I always knew it would be an unforgettable trip I just never thought I would crave the mountains afterwards. I can still feel the cool, crisp air that I inhaled when I walked to the porch to watch the sunrise.…

As we continued our drive, the day felt like any other of our typical adventures. We went to go camping at Skinny Dip Falls about 30 miles into the Parkway. Macklemore was playing from the stereo, and my head was pressed against the window, taking in everything the scenery had to offer. I was infatuated with how the layers of mountains seem to fade away perfectly the further they were. There was a fog that clung low to the valleys giving off a “smoky” appearance, which is the reasoning behind its nickname “The Great Smoky Mountains”.…

Ever since my first backpacking trip 6 years ago, I’ve had an affinity for the Appalachian Trail. I’m constantly looking for excuses to mash our lives into the giant, 50 liter bags, and hit the trail for a few days. This past year, in early fall, I convinced my parents to don their sturdy boots and disappear into the wilds of bear state park with me for three days. We were dropped off at the top of Bear Mountain and, while my parents argued over directions, I wandered around the windswept ridge.…

Saturday started out cool but sunny. The air was filled with the customary morning-in-a-camping-area smell of bacon, the culmination of at least fifty pounds of sizzling pork being fried at the same time in a hundred or more fry pans. In 1964, bacon was mandatory camping vittles, with the exception of corned beef hash—canned—with msg—and sodium. Only vegetarians and spoil-sports substituting ham changed the rule. Stacey prepared breakfast that year, and he ate as voraciously as anyone else in the family.…

Growing up in Southern California we spent most of our summers at Lake Havasu and Parker. For as long as I can remember, getting to spend my summers on the lake with my close friends and family was what got me through the school year, knowing that for a full month I would have no cares in the world except for what adventures lay ahead of us. As the school year came to an end, all we could think about was getting to the lake to start our last summer together before we all ventured off in separate directions. Starting to pack and load up the RV was all I could think about for days, seeing as this was the last summer we would all spend together.…

Many books have been written about the wilderness and the wilderness experience. Literary works devoted to describing the very nature of the wilderness and living in the wilderness allow readers to experience, through the author’s perspective the challenges and the satisfaction one feels when living off the land. Which then allows the reader to develop a newfound or a deeper appreciation for the wilderness. These writings describe the continuous relationship between the wilderness and humanity, and provide some insight into human nature and our ability to survive even in the most severe environments. Indian Creek Chronicles and Desert Solitaire are books that transport the readers to a place not often experienced personally and into the…
