If I were to be stranded on a deserted island my immediate attention would be to find/create shelter, find a safe and clean supply of food and water, and then to explore the island. However after I accomplish all these things I will need some way to stimulate my brain, because if I did not, I would certainly lose my own sanity, comparable to Chuck Noland from the film Castaway. This is where literature comes into play, by selecting a few pieces of literature I can keep myself from reaching Chuck Noland levels of craziness. With this is mind I have selected texts which challenge me to reach a deeper understanding of my own values. In absolute isolation a man’s sole companion are his own thoughts. Each writing selected serves to preserve different aspects my sanity.

Stranded on an island, I’ll find quick decisions around every corner, however in the aftermath of hasty choices hindsight is 20/20. The overactive imagination I possess leads to sometimes excessive analysis of past actions. This tendency handles situations I managed poorly majority of the time, however it causes problems when the circumstances out of my control. Robert Frost writes in regards to the emotions one feels when facing such a decision. The Road Not Taken, debatably Frost’s most well-known poem, paints a vivid image of a person coming to a fork in the road, making a decision, and thinking back on forenamed decision. Frost writes, “Though as for that the passing there / Had worn them really about the same,” (Frost 9-10). Yet he ends the poem with the lines, “I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference.” (Frost 19-20). Frost’s blatant contradiction is meant to show the value of looking back and having faith in one’s decisions, living without regrets.
