The Republic of Honduras, a country nestled in the heart of Central America. A nation that is One Thousand Six Hundred and Twenty Two miles away from the United States. A nation that has a rich culture, magnificent mountains, reefs, beautiful bays and the ruins of ancient Mayan civilizations. The country of Honduras is the epitome of deceiving aesthetic. Thereby, the reality of Honduras is embodied by hopelessness. Violence, corruption, and poverty has prevailed in Honduras. The land that I called home. However, I have learned that with one single dream and determination I could change the world. This vision of mine was to obtain advanced education, contribute to my community and achieve the American dream.
Artica is my family’s last name. My grand-mother and grand-father are descendants from Spanish immigrants in Honduras. They lived below the poverty line in a banana field with 11 children. This is because my grand-father and grand-mother were forced to finish their education in second grade and because my grand-father worked for a banana company in the 1950’s. A job that dirtied my grandfather’s hands in order to put food on the table. The lack of transportation forced my father since a young age, to walk around 3-4 miles barefoot to school.
