The Reef
Along the shallow reefs in Hawaii, despite of different color of fishes, sea plants, also unfamiliar creatures I’ve never seen before. In regard to seeing couple baby sharks, I was a bit cautious with my surroundings. Even though I saw beautiful and strange things along the reefs. As well as, I had my father right beside me, I felt comfortable, and safe, before my father and I started to go snorkeling, the guy, gave us instructions , in spite of any dangerment comes our way. After the long lecture, my dad and I headed to the reefs to go snorkeling. I dove right into the water and feel the coldness of it come up my wetsuit. Swimming through schools of fish, and recognizing different species of coral and reef. Bubbles are emerging from my regulator, they glide past my mask like mini jelly fish talking to me in their own language. They make me relax and take in all the excitement and forget about all my worries. I’m diving down to look at a giant vivid purple clam, I swipe my hand across the face of the unusual looking creature and it slammed shut. I feel like I am drifting off to another universe but in actual fact I am right here. I can hear everything because sound travels twice as fast in water than it does on land. I look down at an anemone and out pops three little clown fish, there were two adults and one cute little baby. I look over to the left and a bunch of brightly colored starfish caught my eye, there were bright blue ones, pretty pink ones, great green ones and perfect

I could hear the dark rumble of the waves crashing over the shore, and the shrieking screams of children playing in the water. My feet massaged themselves, and the toasty sand crept over my skin. It felt like a daydream. Umbrellas perched everywhere, sticking themselves into the beautiful, white sand. Seagulls hovered themselves over the the scene, occasionally taking a rest, and would peck at…

On February 19th, I attended the 2017 Epcot International Festival of the Arts located in the World Showcase of Epcot Park, Disney World Florida. This outdoor gala encompassed an array of fine arts exhibited under fine white tents along the World Showcase’s walking paths. As I strolled along the pathway, I came across one particular framed photograph that captured my interest. It was a large digital photo of an under view of a pier and it was titled, “Pacific Tides” by Carlos Cuba. As I gazed at this piece, I began to admire the serenity the print inspired within me.…

In the first few weeks of my father’s senior year in high school he was called into the principal’s office and he was told, “Mr. Bragdon, if you don’t start showing up for school I am going to expel you.” See at the time, dad’s single mother of four was struggling to pay the bills, which meant he needed to do whatever he could to supply the family with an additional income. So he went lobstering. In response to the principal, the very next day dad walked into his office and set down on his desk a stack of books and his check from that week. He then looked at the principal and said “Sir, I believe I just made more in one week than you will in the next two months.…

Marine Science has always been a particularly fond past time of mine. Ever since I was the mere age of three, while sitting in a bathtub, I had an inseparable fascination with the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. From the otherworldly giant tube worms situated on volcanic vents, to the serene basking shark meandering through the current, all of it showcased the diversity of the world beneath the surface of the waves.…

The sun rays left me squinting and I walked back to a shop near the shore for some shade underneath a palm tree. ’ Two Gulls’ was painted on a wooden board nailed above the door and the wind chimes rang in the distance to warn the shop owners of each visitors entry. On display in the window were rows of miniature seashell necklaces, hand painted ornaments, and assorted taffy. My eyes drifted off to the shore to find a grey dolphin jump out of the water followed by a group of others. Each one had a sparkle covering its exterior that soon vanished underneath the blue abyss.…

Since watching the NatGeo/BBC Great Barrier Reef documentary on youtube (youtu.be/dwne0S2Hbag), I have dreamed, fantasized, and basically been obsessed with the desire to see it up close in person. I got to opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Australia with a group of 12 kids, all older than me, that I had never met.…

We watch nature on a tv screen or a small phone but, we do not realize the beauty of nature until we see it in person. In Walt Whitman’s short poem, “When I heard the Learn’d Astronomer” he describes how seeing something on a projector is nothing compared to experiencing it for yourself. This can relate to anything from how watching sports can be cool but playing sports is a lot more enjoyable. Another example that happened to me was when I went snorkeling in Hawaii, online I would see videos of fishes in the ocean but never thought much about it until I experienced it for myself and realized how many different types of fish there was and how memorizing all the different colors and patterns were. I went there this past summer with fourteen…

But once I got out there in the water I would gradually start to love the ocean. Each time I would get braver and go out further, as my mom sat on the beach and watch my brother and I closely. The farther out I would go the water would get this magnificent blue; for allowing you to see all types of beautiful sea shell with all sorts of colors in them, the tropical fish reminded me of the movie Finding Nemo, little pale pieces of sand dollars washed up in the waves on the banks.
