Personal Narrative: The Reciprocal Altruism Theory

Kindness, positive acts, and behaviors should not just be for family and friends, but everyone in society as well. How I see it is the reciprocal altruism theory – “a view that suggests that we may be willing to help people unrelated to us because helping is usually reciprocated.” I believe that helping someone, even a stranger, would not hurt me in any ways. Everyone has their bad days and we should not just help our relatives, but also “help people who are unrelated to us” (Social Psychology, 302). This happened unexpectedly when I was in a supermarket with my mom. We were in line to pay for our grocery and the person, an elderly woman, in front of us did not have enough money. The woman was short a dollar and coincidentally, I had an extra dollar. So, I offered the …show more content…
I chose to offer the dollar because I wanted her to have her grocery and it was as simple as that. She had to make her way to the super market, make her rounds in there, picked her grocery, and waited in line to pay and if she was not even able to get her grocery back to her home, it would just not be fair to her. I did not want her to feel like she wasted her time and effort and in the end, got nothing. I wanted her to feel happy and I know someone out there would have done the exact same thing to me if I was short that one dollar. I was not being all snobbish like I had all the money in the world, but she felt that I understood her needs at that time. Even though she did not know me, she saw my kind gesture and she and I both acknowledged that it was done out of sincerity. This was not a kindness I expected to do, but when I was doing it, I just felt really happy that I was also able to provide grocery for someone with just a dollar. After watching some gameplay videos for the new ps4 game Until Dawn, I was reminded of a strange term I had once heard, the butterfly effect. Upon seeing this, I decided to do some research to find out more about it. The Chaos theory more commonly called the butterfly effect summarized by Edward Lorenz is a branch of mathematics that deals with complex systems whose behaviour is highly sensitive to slight changes in conditions, so that small alterations can give rise to strikingly great consequences. With this, I thought a many life decisions that I had made, both large and small and thought of how they affected my life and how different my life would be if I had chosen to take another path. I am a Christian and with further thought, came to…

I hope people but not because I pity them that because I know where they've been, because I walked in their shoes. Maybe not exactly the same, maybe the details or tweaked a little and maybe one of us has it worse off than the other but nonetheless you help people because you want to. I remember one day I was in the thrift store and there was a little girl and her older sister and her mom was fine with buying the younger one all these nice clothes but the older one can even have one shirt that she wanted at this time I was probably only 13 years old but even then even without knowing what it felt like to not have the money to pay for something I didn't know how it felt to not feel the same, to not feel equal as others so as she walked away I proceeded to grab that shirt bring it to the front and pay for it in secrecy. I put in a bag and right after they walked out the door I ran out to them and I said hey, I think you forgot a bag they acted confused because I could've swore they got everything…

She also says, “Well, you didn’t have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes,” “You could of asked me.” she would even give a total stranger who she didn't know money to buy shoes, If that's not the definition of generosity, than I don't know what is. In closing, when people help strangers they don't know, it's an act of kindness, but when they take them into their home and take care of them that shows a true kindhearted person. Growing up I was told, the best people aren't the people that do good when everyone is watching and expects them to, it's the people who do it when no one thinks they will, Mrs.Jones didn’t bring Rodger home because she didn't want to look bad in public, she did it out the kindness of her…
