It was the morning after my father’s wedding, and my sister Amanda, her friend Kailyn, my girlfriend Olivia, and I were all laughing with each other just minutes after waking up. It was just a typical day, we went upstairs, had a vegan-made breakfast of tofu scramble, and talked about what we liked from the after party. I loved all the positivity and satisfaction that instantly filled every room. My father and his new fiance Eleanor, came to the kitchen looking rather worn out. We could argue it was the hangover. After breakfast, Olivia, Amanda, Kailyn, and I all went back to the basement. We sat on our phones, laughed about memories from the prior night, and looked

I could feel the tension and negativity fill the air already. After answering, she immediately ran and sat by a wall bursting into tears. She was the first to receive the news that my Aunt had passed away. This was one of the worst things I could have been told, for obvious reasons. With all the sudden emotions filling me up, I dashed to the back bedroom and started to cry. Olivia came back to comfort me for a few minutes. She looked and sounded like she was losing her mind, so I knew that the worst thing I could do was break down in front of her. Witnessing death was something that came surprisingly easy for me. I didn’t scream, I didn’t become sick, I was oddly settled. When my father pulled over to the side of the road and assisted a man who was a victim of a hit and run, instead of cowering into my mother’s arms, I jumped out of the car as well, and listened to the orders that my father shouted to me. As I assisted in rendering aid, I noticed that despite the bone protruding out of the man’s body, the bruises blanketing his body, and the dangerously large amounts of blood that he was exsanguinating, sudden realization of the situation entered into my mind. This was not an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, this was real.…
