Personal Narrative: The Plano West Mighty Wolf Band

“Can I get a Wolfpack?” someone yells across the field. “Wolfpack!” I yell back with 190 other schoolmates. We repeat this call and response two more times before letting out a fierce cry. I am proud to be a member of this tradition, also known as the end-of-practice call of the Plano West Mighty Wolf Band. I am also glad to be a part of this organization because it has connected me to many friends at Plano West. But what a majority of those friends do not know is that I had never been even remotely associated with such a tradition until the second semester of my sophomore year. This is because I relocated from California to Texas in the middle of sophomore year. Moving was second nature to me. In fact, I have relocated five times before this most recent move. My family has been constantly on the move since my father landed an electrical engineering job at Siemens. Ever since, he had to travel abroad often, switching jobs at times. Eventually, my father found a job offering in California, and he asked me and my mother to join him. After that, the three of us have gone wherever my father’s jobs took him. By the time I relocated to Plano, I …show more content…
Because I swam and played water polo for Terra Linda High School, my feet were more used to beating the water at a fast rate than moving on the ground with a constant tempo. As a result, I could not march well and was forced to become a non-marcher both years at Plano West. As a non-marcher, however, I was able to learn more about marching band and music. For example, observing the marchers’ feet keep up with the tempo enabled me to follow the tempo better while playing concert music. This failure to become a marcher also drove me to find and be better at other extracurricular activities, especially math and science

I remember my 10 year old self sitting in the stands at the very first Roosevelt Rough Rider football game of the 2007-2008 season, and half-time had just began. My sister was in the marching band so I sat there scanning the field for her, but couldn’t find her. I stood up and looked one more time until I saw her, standing tall on top of the drum major podium, calling the band to attention and putting her hands in position to begin conducting the band. I watched her, in awe of how her hands moved as they hit every beat, giving the band the tempo to the music.…

Memoir Rough Draft While everyone starts to complain about school starting, I was already at school before August for marching band. Day in and day out, all of us worked our hardest, having fun, helping out, and getting to know each other well. It was hot, many times over a hundred degrees, although sometimes it felt worse, as if we were getting baked in the warm sun rays. However, we were there for a purpose, and we all shared a common goal, a dream, to become better as a marching band. Of course we were exhausted, after long hours, but I owe my life to band for making me who I am.…

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to move. No, not at all. A fresh start was healthy for me, and the whole ordeal was just screaming at me to make some friends for once, to dive head first into a completely different lifestyle and become a new person. It would have been my intent to become one of those people who wake up at 5am and do yoga and drink water with fruit in it, and then go for a jog. But that would have been quite the change from who I was before moving.…

Not everyone enjoys moving, especially if it’s far from someone you’re close to, but it could have its advantages. For me moving was constant but the hardest was moving from my grandmother’s house. I had grown closer than ever to her and my cousins. It was devastating for the first few months, leaving the calm peaceful country to live in a noisy city. I had problems sleeping and I often worried of what my grandmother felt about or what she thinks of me now.…

Have you ever experienced moving? I did. During one summer, after second grade, I moved to Gwinnett County with the help of my mom and her friend. Both my mom and her friend found the house, but of course, it was my brother and I who partially did the heavy lifting. During the relocation of our possessions, trouble occurred mainly because of distance and curiosity.…

Car rides can kill. Car rides can kill people, happiness, and fences. I learned they could kill fences the hard way-I watched my best friend demolish one with a tan minivan in the middle of nowhere the day we were scheduled to drive across three states to get home. Next to no apology was given by Emma, the guilty driver, to the owners of the poor fence. This was one of many eventful car rides that took place between Illinois and Colorado this summer.…

From the outside, I resemble the kind of person who has had an easy go at life, strolling through, not having to endure frequent hardships. Of course, many have this look painted on them, but not often is it the truth, and not often does it represent any significant part of their life story. Although I look like I might have lived in Oregon my whole life, I have actually moved seven times, beginning in the valleys and suburbs of Los Angeles. The first eight years of my life were relatively peaceful, living in a large home only an hours drive away from Hollywood.…

At age 76, he is still working as hard as the day he got there, despite the fact that he only has eight fingers now. My father has geographically lived the same area his whole life, but he does not have somewhere he feels like he belongs.…
