Born in 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia, I was exposed to American history since I was young. In 1797, I moved to Kentucky along with many others wanting to pursue careers in law and politics. My political career began in 1803 when I was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly then appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1806. I was Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams.…

As we were using the restroom Andrew Myers, Jahzara Mckinney, Kadance Gravely, Maddox Lyons, Hayden Elliott, Kaylie Hawks and myself were pulled into the sewers and through a pipe that somehow took us to a island. We were stranded there by ourselves the island was like a forest in a way it has tall redwood trees high grass like the jungle and a beautiful glossering pond. So as we were there we were all panicking then I just got really quiet. Journal Ed Welch talked about how our histories can impact us, particularly in dealing with conflict. God used this to help me see how I approach conflict as a gardener would his garden. I have a family member who approaches it more like a sword-yielding gladiator, and this has led to struggles. Realizing these differences has vastly improved our relationship. A dear friend of mine recently experienced a conflict with another individual.…

I come from a poor family. I never had brand-name shoes or video games, or even a Lisa Frank binder and stickers like my friends at school, but I always had plenty of food in the fridge at home. My family never went hungry in spite of the fact that we were raised by a single mother who made her living as a coffee shop waitress. I did not know, till I was a teenager, that my mom bought the majority of our groceries with food stamps. It never seemed odd to me that she went to the grocery store one time a month and stocked up on milk, sugar, lunchmeat, chicken legs, hamburger meat, and most importantly, coffee.…

I wish the American Ideal was true in a perfect fairy tale world it would be but in reality it is very far from being true many people want to pretend everyone has the same opportunity because of the great opportunities they have had in their life. I guess to not have to face the reality people would rather pretend it does not exist rather than to be a voice of change. Even still today people of different ethnicities are still being discriminated against even if they are over qualified because of many racial stereotypes. Additionally everyone does not have the same level playing field educational opportunities nor vital networking connections.…

Growing up, I noticed, when approached with conflict, my sisters and my mother would often state that they did not want to talk about it or would simply leave the room. I now have a phrase for this: the exit response. For us, the exit response was always temporary. If the problem was serious, it would eventually be brought back up; if it wasn’t, then things usually got better on its own. While my dad is often the first to use the voice response, I have noticed that my dad often chooses the loyalty response, too.…
