The picture of Bud Field and his family is depressing. For example, the ill-fittingruined clothes show the sad mood in the image. The lady on the left, perhaps the mother, is wearing a ripped and aged dress. The young girl has a foul dress that is much bigger than her true size. The man in the center has no shirt. This picture is black and white of young boy called Flavio, feeding rice to his younger brother Zacarias. My first impression of Flavio’s archive was that it seemed to be a very sad story. This photo shows the horrors of poverty and Flavio’s strength to survive, and even the courage to accept death without even thinking about himself but of his brothers and sisters. I did some research and found out that Flavio is a 12-year-old boy who has the huge responsibility of being an adult. He is able to accept this responsibility while still remaining vibrant and hopeful even though Flavio is suffering from a physical illness, poverty, overwork and worry.…

It was springtime during the year of 2012, I was just about to start my summer. I was looking on the internet for sports to do in Kaneland, because I wanted to compete at a higher level. But I was not always comfortable with playing on a travel baseball team, but I knew this could be a great opportunity for me, so I took a risk and after all it, payed off. I asked “Dad would you think I would be able to compete and play on the travel baseball team” He smiled “Yes, but one thing I learned when I was young and playing baseball is; it is a game of mistakes, and the only way you can succeed is if you practice over and over to improve.”…

My summer started off fantastic, I was sleeping in, I was hanging with my fiends, I was helping my dad on the farm and, and playing baseball. I wasn't really worried about school, I was more worried about football. Everyone was telling me that the first 2 weeks of football were going to suck, they were saying that we were going to have to condition a lot. The main thing everyone was talking about was that we had to lift a tone. I kept thinking to myself, why am I doing this, than it hit me, I have to be doing it for a reason, if there wasn't a reason I wouldn't be doing it.…

My recurrent shoulder dislocations were a constant battle, but a battle in which I’d always won. After a dislocation, all it took was a couple weeks of physical therapy before I could return to the baseball field. Although, after my fifth dislocation I ended up sitting in the hospital awaiting the results of my MRI with an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. My surgeon soon returned with news that my injury required a season-ending surgery. Thus, I had a Bankart Repair on my throwing shoulder, and afterwards, although devastated, I supported my teammates from the sidelines for the entirety of the season.…

I moved forward in my seat to look outside the window of the school bus. The trip to Harlem Valley, NY to visit the McEnroe farm was entertaining. Nevertheless, two hours of card games, lots of singing, and a ton of laughing still had me looking at my watch every twenty minutes. Out of all the trips this June, the McEnroe farm was the one that I was looking forward to the most.
