Personal Narrative: The Piano Player

Challenges are in the way of people's life goals. That's why some people's dreams success, and others don't, simply because they don't work hard at it. Those people don't tell themselves, "Nothing is impossible. There is no limit for what you can do." They try to do it, but they just give up. I, as a piano player, faced a very hard challenge coming across the violin. This is my story. I started violin in my sixth grade of grade school, which, apparently, was a very late year to start at. I was very behind with learning the posture; however, notes weren't an issue for me because I had played the piano for 8 years now. Anyway, violin came very slowly to me. It felt very uncomfortable holding it on my left arm, especially because I'm right-handed. Also, the bow grip was very awkward to my hand; the pinky, mostly. I seriously considered quitting orchestra on the first day, but I told myself, "You can do it." By halfway through the school year, I had become somewhat decent …show more content…
But, one of my friends, Chloe, became my new rival because we were always fighting for the top spot even though she was way better than me. I felt desperate for that top spot. So, I did the unthinkable, and went four octaves, beating her easily and with pride. At this moment, I had found my inner-self with the violin: I could go higher with scales than anyone else could. To add, the pressure actually helped me during the test. I was worried that I would miss a note and get lost and play the scale incorrectly, but the pressure kicked in, and before you know it, I wasn't even worried anymore. I knew I had nailed the fingerings, the rhythm, everything. I couldn't believe what I had just did. A four octave scale on a violin felt incredible after I had done it. It just played in my head over and over and over again right after I had finished. Because of this, I had reached my goal to earn the top spot, which made me super

Before I would stiffly sit or stand while moving a bow across a string, but now, that spell is broken, and I can feel the music moving expressively through my body as the melodious notes are played. I often take some time to stop and think about what the composer was trying to portray when writing the piece. My favorite conductor once said “Good. You’ve learned the notes, but you’ve only learned half of the music.” , that was the first time I started paying close attention to what the composer’s feelings were towards the music; the dynamics, expressive terms, and emotions involved in playing the…

If I have not challenged myself to practice and to confront challenges, I could not have become the principal player in our school’s jazz band and wind ensemble. After several breakthroughs, I decided to share my inspirations to the younger generation. This year, I am one of the coordinators of the Molding Musicians program supported by the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, teaching the fifth and sixth graders how to play an instrument. I appreciate the fact that my achievements did not come from an easy work, but rather a persistent standing against…

I was in awe how cool the music sounded and wanted to do the same thing. Get the same instrument no matter what; that’s probably what I thought. Of course, it never happened and I went on with my life. It was just 7 years ago that I was choosing what to play for the first time, I guess you could call that fate. Out of all the instruments that I tried out, the violin was the only thing I made a…

I've played the clarinet for seven years. When I first started playing the clarinet I was in the sixth grade I wasn't very good. In fact, the only reason I had joined the band was because my friends and I didn't get into the same elective; they'd been forced into band, while I was one of the lucky few who'd gotten into computer science. The thought of being separated from my friends did not sit well with sixth-grade me and that's why, at the beginning of sixth-grade, I found my self sitting in band holding a brand new clarinet. Anyways, sixth-grade flew.…

Individuals can overcome intense challenges by working hard, by focusing on how to achieve their goals, in how to change their life and by being motivated rather than focusing on the obstacles that could stop them to not achieve their goal. In the article “Reaching for the Stars” is mostly an example in how to overcomes challenges because the article is mainly about what did Jose Hernandez Jr did to overcome challenges. Hernandez overcome lots of challenges to become an astronaut, he got rejected lots of times for the NASA, but he still works hard to make it until he finally made it. Whether it was my young self having the desire to play the violin or simply me being obstinate in not listening to adults, it’s a wonder to realize that what defines me today is all due to my younger self refusing to give up. Despite my determination, it became clear to me that my passion for the violin was not matched by the effort that I was putting into the instrument. As part of my instruction on the violin, I participated annually in ASTACAP-American String Teachers Association Certificate Advancement Program. Until…

Now, the Classical era did not only change how the violin looked, but it also changed how the violin was used and held. The Classical era brought a new way of holding the instrument, “[the] early Classical period assured holding the violin on the shoulder, though a few village violinists might still have played violins on the breast.” The shoulder playing technique is how modern violinists play the instrument today, but none of this would be possible if were not for the Classical period and its improvements to the instrument. One violinist made the violin into what it is known as today, “The modern bow had been invented by Francois Tourte. Its weight, length, and balance allowed the player to produce power and brilliance in the higher ranges.”…

For almost as long as I can remember, I’ve been playing piano. It has been the most consistent thing in my life and has grounded me during the ups-and-downs of my adolescence. My journey with the piano began as a seven year old at the end of my short affair with the violin. On a trip to my grandparent’s home in Jamaica, I sat at an electric piano with my grandfather and he taught me Hot Crossed Buns. When I returned home, I begged and pleaded with my parents to sign me up for piano lessons, and I abandoned my bow for a bench.…
