Personal Narrative: The Physical Therapist

Decent Essays
I follow a therapist into a room, I stand primed ready for what is next on the agenda. I look up seeing a man with a massive scar on his arm. It traces over his shoulder and down his back to his shoulder blade. I look at him, he seem dazed, while the therapist calls his name getting increasingly louder. The man responds after a few seconds of silence, he opens his eyes a bit saying “I’m here, I’m here”. The physical therapist tells the man what he is about to do and the he calls me over to help, I grab the belt that was put on the man's waist so we can help maneuver him. The man slowly sits up and then continues, as he is now standing up with help from me and the physical therapist’s support. We help him to his walker, he grips the handles

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

After completing the self-assessment tool, one area identified as needed further professional development was incorporating the use of physical agent modalities into my treatment interventions. This was not surprising to learn, as I have always been less comfortable using mechanical and electrotherapeutic modalities due to my lack of extensive training and experience. When I started working as a COTA, I was working in a nursing home where modalities were used infrequently. The combination of being fresh out of school, and my limited knowledge on the subject, resulted in my decision to implement other treatment strategies within my interventions. Currently, I am practicing within the school systems where there are limited opportunities to use…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. Upon seeking medical attention after my back injury, I was prescribed to attend physical therapy twice a week for five weeks.
