It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

Adjusting while Experiencing America is a country composed of different people and diverse cultures. Therefore, there is a good deal of ways of life or cultural phenomena for newcomers to adjust to. Before moving here, I was a little bit optimistic because I have been to some European , Asian and Oceanian counties and saw many different cultures there, so I thought that I might be somewhat prepared for changes. However, when I really stepped my foot on this country, I noticed that I have quite a long way to go before getting used to things such as holidays, tips and people’s names. First of all, it takes time to get familiar with the meaning and background of American holidays and then begin learning to enjoy them.…

Overcoming Obstacles Looking back on the obstacles that I defeated as I was growing up was a bit not as easy as I thought it would be. I had to think about the various times in my life that I felt either overwhelmed or that I was not good enough. I never thought that there were very many in my early life. But looking back, I realize that was a fallacy of my making. Middle School Middle school was an extremely tough time.…

The seven self-assessment quizzes I took were sustainable marriage, parenting style, relationship connectedness, how strong is your relationship, domestic violence, love, lust or a loser, and energy vampires. I was shocked and perplexed with the results of the sustainable marriage, relationship connectedness, and how strong is your relationship. The scores on the sustainable marriage and relationship connectedness were a little low however, I scored very high on how strong is your relationship. I felt as if one of the assessments was low they would all be low instead of 2/3 of them being low. With that being said, there is no doubt my wife and I have a strong relationship.…

The Road Not Taken They say that one should never speak of religion, politics, or money in conversation. Sadly, these are the things I love to talk about. It always made me wonder: why do these topics make people so passionate about their beliefs?…

It was not until my mid-thirties that I embraced a relationship with Jesus, and my life has yet to be the same. For years I questioned why I was born, and felt there was very little purpose to my life, which made me feel very alone. Yet, this was fortunately not the case, and as I surveyed my life from past to present, God was always present and active throughout my life, in spite of my lack of awareness of Him. Suffice it to say, I have finally allowed my mind and spirit to be open to receiving what my calling is, and have acknowledged my Creator’s plans for me. Being a counselor and possible leader, or mentor, has been a passion of mine since I was young, and I can recollect that I always enjoyed hearing people’s stories.…
