Personal Narrative: The PG & E Trail

Improved Essays
“ The PG&E trail is awesome. There are trees everywhere, and you could see lots of animals!”, my dad would say. I wanted to go to the 8 mile hike, but my dad said I couldn’t go, because I was too young.
“Next year, as you become eight, you can go.”.
“But why, we’ve already been practicing tinier hikes. I can take this on!”
A similar conversation would follow every time, and my dad started to give me dirty looks. I got really annoyed, and I would rarely ask anymore.
One day as my dad was about to leave, I asked him if I could go. I turned around, expecting the answer. However, it was a yes! I had finally struck gold! This was going to be a piece of cake, I thought. “ It’s not that easy to the top, you know.”, my dad said, as if reading my

My lungs were desperately gasping for air. My feet ached like crazy. My heart beat seemed to be going faster than ever. The rain had stopped a while back, and surprisingly, the trail had already dried. A rainbow glistened to the side, and the sun came back up, leaving a wonderful view. Sadly, I had no strength to admire the scenery, because adding to my energy loss, it was now getting tremendously hot. Nevertheless, I kept going. I knew that if I could do this, it would be a big accomplishment. I saw a point ahead which looked like a peak. I got excited and hurried up the mountain. I was going to do this!, I was thinking. All my enthusiasm dropped when I saw it wasn’t the peak.
“ You’re kidding right...”, I murmured, feeling shocked. To my left was a climb more precipitous than anything I had ever seen. I looked to my left and saw a huge climb, steeper than any other part of the hike. With as shock I realized this was the final climb my dad was warning me about. Nowadays, if I looked at that climb, I would climb up without hesitation. But at that point, it looked like a cliff. I didn’t think I could walk 10 more meters, and here this climb was. I was seriously thinking of quitting. My legs were throbbing tremendously, and this heat was frying me like a omelette. But with my dad’s encouragement, I kept going.
“ Just a little more”, he would keep telling

Easy had nothing to do with it! Although the Clear Creek Route may have been the easiest route to Shasta’s summit, I'm convinced that one can never over-train for a high elevation hike. Are the serious health implications caused by hypoxia worth the emotional fulfilment of summiting at high altitude? In Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, the severely hypoxic climbers atop Mount Everest fall victim to a series of fatal mistakes that result in the tragic death of fifteen climbers in the spring of 1996. Serious health implications including AMS, HAPE, and HACE weigh heavily on a climbers decision to summit at high altitude despite the recent technological improvements in modern mountaineering. AMS, or acute mountain sickness, is a broad description of the myriad ailments that plague those who push themselves at high altitude. An important piece of information to be aware of is that "the common feature in all types of altitude illnesses is the onset of hypoxia, a deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the body's, particularly the brain, where there…

Most of it consisted of me trying to pop my ears. When we got there, I prepared myself physically and mentally. As I was stretching, I thought of how hard it would be. I had never really climbed a mountain so I knew I was in for a hard time. As we were starting, I realized that the climb up would be a lot harder than the climb down because gravity would be pulling you down.…

Some people say that in order to accomplish an obstacle, you must have courage. When I was about seven years old, I remember going to my dad's military base a few hours before he was deployed to Iraq. It was a family day for the families of the army members who were going to be deployed. A family day was a day to spend time with military members and to unwind, have food, enjoy yourself, and do fun activities with your family on the military base. After a few hours of relaxing and eating, the people who were deployed, including my dad, had to head to the launch pad to take off.…

The warmness of the afternoon mixed with the cool breeze blowing lightly tickled my nose as I swung in a white crochet hammock. I could hear the faint sound of the lapping of the lake on the rocky shore. Bugs chirped to say goodbye to summer and the sun cast across the water making it glimmer. I looked across the water to cherry island which I longed to visit but my mom and dad told me no because it was private. I saw the old boat "patches" resting on the grass near the shore drying.…

Amazingly, it felt like we were looking at hundreds of other 14ers that still had snow on them. Soon we had to climb down with the wind blowing like crazy. But, we still had one more mountain to climb, Elbert, the tallest peak in Colorado. In conclusion, if I put my mind to doing something that I am not comfortable doing and trust myself, I learned I am a brave human being.…

My vision started to fail on mile four of the six-mile hike. Small white specks flickered across my field of vision. The next thing to go was my hearing, followed by my ability to walk in a straight line. My platoon sergeant saw the signs of heat stroke and forced me to stop. I should have stopped myself, but all I could think was: you will finish this, or you will die trying.…

“Okay, no problem,” I thought, “I have Asprin in the car, I’ll get some when I get back,” I continued to forge my way down the trail, albeit at a slightly quicker pace now. I began to feel thirsty as the dry dust caked my throat and the sun beat down on me. I reached for my water before realizing that I had recycled it at the summit. “Fuck!” I swore aloud, my heart beating at a pace slightly more rapid than usual.…

My breathing was becoming labored as the mountain became steeper. Albert suddenly suggested that I take a shortcut with him. I took a deep breath and climbed up the steep slopes grabbing whatever branch I could to pull myself up with. I took a step back and surveyed the small spacings of the roots up the side of the mountain.…
