I then looked down in order to not become disoriented by the lights and I realized that this “dance floor” consisted of just a muddy pit that had a minimal amount grass. Because of this, everyone left the event with brown/orange tinted shoes from the mud on the ground. So once we finally got into the smoke-filled room with blinding lights, there was music playing very loud. The DJ was positioned high above the crowd, so it was hard to see him from where I was positioned.…
The hardest thing I’ve ever went through? Let me take you back to almost three years ago to a very cold Thursday morning in January. I was sitting in history class when suddenly something very strange happened; the announcement speakers came on. To most people it would seem like it was a very typical day to day event to listen to announcements; but at my school announcements were rarely ever said. My classroom got completely silent; to the point where you could have heard a pin drop.…
The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…
Every since 7th grade I was in ABC. ABC is an advance class of orchestra where we play anything but classical music, hence the name. ABC was a class that started before school, and anyone who was in 7th or 8th grade could join. Usually our orchestra teacher was Mr. Hudson but the teacher for ABC was Mrs. Dykman. ABC music in middle school is meant to be harder and faster but at the time the music seemed easier and I was ready for a challenge.…
My freshman year of college I struggled greatly with the cost of college. I had moved out of my mother’s house and was living with my grandmother. I worked a part time job of 15 hours while taking 19 hours of school. Because I did not have my own place I was still considered under my mother’s income. My mother does not make very much money.…
What could I clean in my room for Spring Break? I could probably clean the papers lying all over my room that my little sister throws everywhere. My room is very messy with papers that have scribbles on them from my sister. I should also clean my closet because it is filled with old clothes that are too small for me to wear. I can also clean all of my sister’s toys that are under my bed.…
Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…
The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…
Hamilton took me by surprise. I knew it was a small liberal arts college, but I had no grasp on how unique and genuine the community was. So many people said hi to my tour guide, Emily, as she showed me around -- including the line cook in the dining hall! I also heard how a student emailed 10 alumni to help her with something, and all of them replied to her. This kind of close-knit, loving family is what I want in a college experience.…
"Reset!" Mr. Z shouted through the obnoxious megaphone. Our mouths dry and salty, the entire band hurried lazily to their last set hoping not to be singled out. I spun around and pushed my foot forward when bam! I smashed right into a tuba player.…
Sa. The first note that I ever heard and the beginning to my musical life. This one note was enough to change my small world that I existed in. Then came the rest of the scale. Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni.…
My college life started in the summer of 2012, all of my hopes and ambitions were suspended in mid air. The apogee of the first year of my college life in spite of facing the stigma of my age group; was that of the support I received from the instructors in helpimh making my career goals obtainable. During the second semester of my third year of college I started losing my passion. I changed my major from Anthropology to Criminal Justice and tried to keep going. However; needing to take a step back.…
My band teacher has taught me a lot in high school. I have had a hard time in high school. I have always been active with sports, but I have had many injuries along the way. Freshman year I broke my pelvis, sophomore year tore my labrum in my shoulder, and junior year I found out that I fractured my spine in two spots (L5). I was told I couldn't play sports.…
Before walking into room W3, I took a deep breath. The first day of Freshman Composition was finally here. The counselor told me Freshman Composition was a college course; therefore, I must take it. I was beyond regretting my decision of enrolling in it the day I stepped into Mrs. Scarborough’s classroom.…
The dorm was just how I pictured it. It was small, hot, and plain. My whole family had driven up to Uconn to help my brother, Nicholas, more into his new dorm. We were all sad, but happy for him. This room was going to be his home for the next four years.…
