Personal Narrative: The Milkshake

It was a calm autumn night in October of 2010, and my sisters and I were just polishing off an exquisite dinner prepared by my mom. At the time, my oldest sister (Ellie) was 10, I was 8, Deirdre was 6, and Kathleen (my youngest sister) was 2. My dad hadn’t returned from his office, yet. After dinner, we decided to wash it down with an ice cold, creamy, chocolatey milkshake, She hauled the heavy blender out of the kitchen cabinet. The vanilla ice cream. The milk. The chocolate sauce…mmmm. While my mom was preparing the milkshake in the kitchen (which I couldn’t stop thinking about) my sisters and I were playing “Trouble” in the living room. The game started off great, until Deirdre accused Ellie of cheating. We all got into a big fight.

A big game at the Blake hockey arena had me drenched in sweat. The Junior Varsity game had just finished the second period, which indicated I had about 45 minutes until the Varsity went on for warmups. Walking into the locker room from my usual pre-game routine, I sat down next to my hockey bad rearranging everything in the specific order I would put it on. I felt the urge to have a bite of my Cliff bar, but only a little bit because I do not like playing on a full stomach. I took my retainer off and had about half of the Cliff bar.…

The Fish Milkshake This is a true story I like to tell that happened to me when I was 8 years old. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that an individual child with a desire to gain one Snickers bar, must be prepared to trade no less than three Twix bars. In my household, every bag of fun sized confections was an opportunity for a ridiculous negotiation with a not so ridiculous lesson behind it. When my father loves Snickers just as much as I do, why should he take only one inferior Twix for one Snickers? Critically assessing how much my companion stands to lose versus how much I was willing to pay to get what I want is a skill I have been developing since middle school. Negotiation and debate, human interaction of all kinds have always piqued my interests both academically and recreationally.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

I filled a pot with water just as Connor walked into the kitchen curious to see what all the noise was about. He noticed I was not just re-heating left overs and sped out of the kitchen to get his chef hat and step-stool. He helped me pour shell pasta noodles skillfully into the bubbling water, prepared the slices of bread with butter on one side, and even sprayed the cooking grease into the skillet just like I had done with my mom at his age. After I mixed the cheese sauce into the pasta, Connor asked me why I had made macaroni and cheese. I told him I was making a special grilled cheese sandwich just for him.…
