Personal Narrative: The Meat Market

One Saturday afternoon, my fiancé came home sweating profusely from playing basketball and asks, “Babe, teach me how to cook curry chicken, pleaseeee.” I responded, “You’re kidding right? Let’s learn how to boil water first.” Both of us laugh, however, I notice that he is serious so I obliged to his wants. After he showered, we we’re en route of the meat market. The meat market is the worst smelling place I’ve encountered in all my years. As I walked through the vertical plastic strip door, I held my breath for dear life. After 3 minutes or so I was able to stand the smell of the bloody raw meats. He led me to the chicken display and we carefully made the decision to purchase legs, thighs, and wings. In his essay, “What You Eat is Your Business” Radley Balko asserts that it is not the government’s responsibility what you put into your body. He calls for no regulation on the fast food industry, declaring it a personal responsibility issue. Balko claims that the best method of reducing the obesity problem is removing it from the public sector, and making it a personal problem. However, I believe that he is oversimplifying an issue which he does not fully understand. I also believe that he is mistaking regulation of industry and informing consumers of what they are eating for socialized medicine.…

I knew Red Lobster was a bad option. I wanted to go to Outback Steakhouse, but mom had her way, even on MY high school graduation. I was stuck, sitting in the booth, waitress staring at me for 15, 16, 17 seconds now. Sitting in my cap and gown, she asked again – “where are you going to college?” I’d prefer the Bloomin’ Onion to this any day of the week.…

Most consumers are unaware that “every day in the United States, roughly 200,000 people are sickened by a foodborne disease, 900 are hospitalized, and fourteen die” (Schlosser 195), a statistic that is largely influenced by the unsanitary methods in which slaughterhouses handle the meat they eat. Schlosser provides in-depth detail to the reader as to how uncleanly slaughterhouses operate; knives are contaminated, employees are rushed and overworked, and meat is not properly sterilized. To readers, the abundance of facts that Schlosser includes may come across as overbearing and dull, given that Fast Food Nation is not short of strong bias. The author’s opinions are often one-sided, especially when he twists seemingly positive aspects of the industry against itself. If the audience is able to move past Schlosser’s parochial point of view, they will find the novel intriguing.…

Andy is forty-six years old and owns the bodega in northern Brooklyn that supplies almost everything you need daily, from snacks to soap. When he moved to Brooklyn from Columbia almost twenty-five years ago he decided to open up the store to make a living and provide money for his family.…

Mallory Cattle catastrophes After a whole disastrous string of events containing many visits to the emergency room, an unrepaired broken tooth, life changing tragedy, and many legal issues that prevented me from staying at my own school, I journeyed to a new tiny school in the trash can of Los Angeles called Summit View West. Confused, overly optimistic, and determined to start a new, I did my best to start a new reputation; unlike my old one: “That Gay Awkward Weirdo”. Because I had Hung out with Jessica (The Nose Picker), Danni (The Sl**), Sarah (The Autistic Girl), and Bella (The Stalker), it didn’t help my situation.…

I come from a poor family. I never had brand-name shoes or video games, or even a Lisa Frank binder and stickers like my friends at school, but I always had plenty of food in the fridge at home. My family never went hungry in spite of the fact that we were raised by a single mother who made her living as a coffee shop waitress. I did not know, till I was a teenager, that my mom bought the majority of our groceries with food stamps. It never seemed odd to me that she went to the grocery store one time a month and stocked up on milk, sugar, lunchmeat, chicken legs, hamburger meat, and most importantly, coffee.…

The way the author uses such descriptive wording, such as how she describes the long gray veins in the meat that she spears with her fork (182), is a great way to make the reader have the vision of that hunk of meat in their minds. As a lifelong dog owner, Hodgman’s detailing of each brand she chooses and exactly what it looked and smelt like, brought back countless memories of opening dog food cans and that pungent smell hitting me, yuck. The essay just isn’t about a person’s decision to eat dog food, it’s true point is to inform the readers of just how false the advertising is for the food. What are meat by products?…
