Personal Narrative: The Maniac Boy

Improved Essays
With cellophane wrapped untidily around my head and garbed in the utmost ill fitted white spandex clothing, I performed in my first musical. Being on stage somehow translates into being unapologetic and living purely through instinct for me. So, in moments of my delivery of the choreography flawlessly, putting all the other lollipops to shame, a star was born.
From a young age, my brown hair and urge to wear plaid button-up shirts with sweatpants made me different from the crowd; I always seemed to find myself alone on the playground. I was the boy no one really wanted to talk to unless it was to get some gum. At school dances, I always was the maniac boy who couldn’t stop jumping up and down, dancing. On the baseball field, I was the clueless

Insecurity Growing up on a farm with two older brothers, I was a bit of a tomboy. From birth until age seven, my favorite toys were Tonka trucks and wooden guns. I wrestled in the mud, ate like a teenage boy, and at the age of five took scissors to my hair, chopping it into a pixie cut, so I could “be like my older brothers”. Innocently, I wore my barn clothes to school and my kindergarten picture displays my hair in a rats nest, with a large crooked smile, and bright eyes. However, that yearbook picture changed as my innocence faded away.…

I came from a shy and insecure mindset, but being chosen for the soloist position in a new style of worship would change everything for me.…

My ears ring as the old school bus screeches to a halt. We hop off, and a dry, winter gust smacks my face. Instantly, the frigid wind sends my nose running. Walking towards the back door of the school, I grasp the cold metal handle, open it, and slam a piece of wood underneath to keep it ajar. After we become accustom to the cold shock, Mrs. Cimenski, our director, orders us to haul the heavy wooden tables and a set of four lockers toward our designated backstage area.…

"You just didn't have a sparkle in your eye. " Only a few weeks after my seventeenth birthday, I sat in front of a panel of adults I had once adored as they told me why they had crushed my lifelong dream. For obvious reasons, I did not like the answer. My entire life I had dedicated to performing- singing, dancing, and acting. I always had a desire to be a star someday, and when I was awarded the voice scholarship at my high school and given featured roles in the musical every year, I thought my opportunity to be a star was finally within reach.…

As both a male cheerleader and performer, being ostracized is not rare. Overcoming this feeling has helped me realize that cheerleading and musical performances are significant aspects of my identity, as well as some of my best memories of high school. Standing in the exquisite balcony of Carnegie Hall, the rotunda of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Museum, or the wings of a stage in Hershey Park could never prepare me for the rejection I routinely felt throughout high school. Being a male performer, I found myself feeling dismissed by the rest of my school. Nevertheless, my dedication to our music department has contributed to plentiful self-growth, countless performances, awards and accolades, but ultimately it has provided me with outstanding…

It was a Saturday morning March 17, 1996 I was eight months in my mother’s tummy and my due date was in mid April. Uncle Benito had the crazy idea of going to the snow all because my mother had never seen the snow. My mother told me of a hill she sled down from, a great slope that didn’t leave her feeling to good “No me siento muy bien.” My uncle rushed her to Granada Hills Hospital on the morning of March 19, 1996; I was born seven pounds at eight minutes until eight.…

Every child seems to have their own memories of theater class, all with their own interpretations. Everyone seems to remember the days of acne-ridden teenagers, all worrying about their next performance in front of the class. While everyone remembers the tacky costumes and cheesy lines, almost no one can recollect the valuable information shared that filled their heads at the time. The teacher shared more with their students than just how to recite lines. They taught them how to be comfortable in their own skin, how to pick themselves up again after they fall, all while informing them of the rich history of theater.…

My shiny pink rain boots sent drops of muddy water soaring through the air as I splashed along the dirt road. I jumped from puddle to puddle, excitedly following Wendy, the woman in charge of camp. It was my first day at Barnyard Bonanza: a summer camp for kids between the ages of six and twelve that gave them the chance to spend time on a farm. As an animal-obsessed eight year old, this camp was a dream come true. I’d practically begged Wendy to let me clean out a horse stall, and I could have watched the chickens strut around their pen for hours.…

Due to my mother’s recent mammogram and the unknown results. every phone call brought heightened tensions, who knew a minuscule breast lump could bring such severe anxiety. Upon answering the phone, I knew by my mother’s facial expression that the results are what we all feared; she was told that she needed to come in for further consolations and the final reveal of the results.
