After seeing the truck I thought that he was driving reckless but I saw car after car in the ditches and I could tell my dad was nervous he was sweating a lot. We then saw that a car behind us had the high beam lights on and we also saw it coming real quick and it was a big car that had to cross to the other side of the road to pass us because he wasn't able to stop, it was those cars that remove snow and put salt on the road going that quick. As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

In the book, World War Z, by Max Brooks, a character, Jacob Nyathi, recalls a time when he was hospitalized and pumped full of drugs, which kept him from having to confront the reality of his situation, specifically an outbreak of “African rabies” in Cape Town. Through his drug haze, Nyathi overheard voices arguing about the situation and in retrospect says, “It’s funny, I go over that conversation all the time in my head, what I should have thought, felt, done. It was a long time before I sobered up again, before I woke up and faced the nightmare” (32). Like Nyathi, I have also avoided facing reality. One time, I didn’t want to face having to tell my parents that I high centered one of their vehicles.…

Later on that day I got a text from the person and they were so mad at the fact we did what we did. I told him I didn’t do it and he threatened to call the cops. So, I eventually told him it was me and, I think he came up with this story of calling the cops just to try and scare me. The aroma of uncertainty surrounded the paramedics in the helicopter. The twenty-minute ride felt like a lifetime and in that lifetime it had me wondering about how this happened. Our youth group took us on a trip so we could strengthen our friendships and connect with new friends.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me. This sickness made it impossible for me to see a positive future, until the day I stopped calling myself “crazy” and began to grow from what we all call, depression.…
