Personal Narrative: The Loss Of A Loved One

The Loss of a Loved One When my husband’s grandfather passed away, it was one of the saddest moments of our lives. My husband, Chase, is not afraid to express his feelings. That being said we have been together seven years and I have seen him cry only a handful of times, three of them being over a death in the family. Seeing someone I care about so much breaking down over the loss of his Papaw Jim, is something that will stick with me for a long time. Jim’s wife, Nana Ruth, was a special kind of pain in the rear. She could not get along with anyone, especially her daughter, Laura, Chase’s mom. Therefore, we hardly ever saw them, but I do remember Thanksgiving in 2010, the first time I met Papaw Jim. We were all gathered at Laura’s house. Laura and Ruth were in the kitchen bickering about something. Chase and I were at the dining table with Jim. He was the exact opposite of Ruth, so sweet and soft spoken, even though he had a booming voice. He smelled like cigarettes from all those years of smoking and Brut after shave, he smelled like a grandpa. We sat together while I listened to their stories of when Chase was a little rascal of a child. I will never forget the look on Chase’s face that day, it was like seeing the kid in him. Not a care in the world and just remembering the good old days of spending time outside playing with his …show more content…
We talk about Jim fondly a few times a year, and I’m always eager to listen to stories from their past. I know it will never be the same not having his papaw to talk to or spend time with, but we both know he is still around, checking in on us now and then. That day changed my perspective on life forever. Not having to deal with much death before this, I never had to deal with the pain of losing a loved one. It made me realize how truly short and fragile life can be. No matter how much time you think someone has, you need to make sure they know how much you love

Several years ago, when I was a brand new nurse’s aide, I had an experience with a dying patient that changed my perspective completely. I was scheduled to be a 1:1 companion with her for a 12 hour shift. The lady had received the news the day before that she most likely not live more than another week or two. And she was very much at peace with this, when talking to throughout my shift I inquired how she could be so calm and collected. She told me that death was just the next step.…

The second half of Die Wise elaborated the lessons Jenkinson portrays within his trade. I enjoyed learning about his views on the current state of the palliative care system and he seems to be one of the few people within this line of work that is willing to be frank with the patients he works with. The story I liked the most was the one about Louise and the relationship he had with her. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to work with someone who is unwilling to accept things as they are or are suffering from the severe anxiety of dying. With Louise, it seemed as though she had accepted the odds and was ready to move on while retaining a good sense of humor.…

The morning of Saturday November 1st, 2014, I woke up to three hundred text messages and twitter notifications all notifying me that my friend, Dominik Pettey, was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver the previous night. No pain had ever felt so significant, it was crippling, but then instead of pain, I was numbed by the inability to grasp that my friend someone who I just had seen the night before, was gone. I ran the words “Dom is dead” through my head on a loop but could not bring myself to accept it. That week, although I was still here, facing such a tragedy, everything on earth seemed so insignificant, going to class, homework, midterms, everything. I woke up every morning wishing it was just in a bad dream and that noise would never cease because that is when it hit me the most, silence, when I didn't hear Dom’s infectious laugh or when he wasn't telling me that, “I am Kiera Wainer and deserve the best God can give”, which he used to say anytime I was upset, the first time he said those words was the second worst day of my entire life, it was the day my dad left for his new family.…

A death of someone is never easy to handle, especially when it’s someone you truly care about. Growing up, the subject of death was never really concealed from me. My parents were very upfront about it and taught me that it is part of life. I have experienced multiple deaths throughout my years, both of family and nonfamily members, but only 4 of them really impacted me and taught me lessons. I wouldn’t say that these experiences of death has made me numb to it, but has shaped the way that I handle and look at death.…

Loss is never an easy thing to cope with, to recover from or to easily discuss. When a parent loses a child, it’s the kind of hurt that runs deep. A hurt that can never be forgotten because it has permeated the mind of that parent, family and community. For example, when my brother was 21, he lost his battle with sickle cell. This happened in Nigeria in the early 90’s where there was no adequate access to quality healthcare.…
