Personal Narrative: The Lives Of Native Americans

Decent Essays
I was born in North America in the 1500’s and I live in the wilderness with my people, the Native Americans. We do all we can to survive the wild. We hunt for food, build teepees used for shelter, and make small villages. We do all we can to keep our selves alive. Then, one day we were hunting for buffalo as usual, and we suddenly heard a sound coming from the shore. I couldn’t believe what was happening or who these people where, or where they came from and why, so my first instinct was to attack. I got my bow and arrow and started shooting at them. They had a very white and pinkish skin color. I asked to myself, “what do they want from us”. A couple of hours of just fighting passed, and we all decided to stop and talk things out.

Body crouched, holding on to a miniature blanket are the memories that cannot be eased from my head. Low temperature is a constant reminder of my harsh times as a homeless child with not a thing to loose, only an empty stomach behind. Thinking that crossing over would be the most difficult challenge of the “American Dream”. My parents did not come prepared for the far more challenges to come.…

A metaphor to thoroughly interpret my own cultural identity would be the coconut delicacy known as Haupia. Not only for its elegant perplexion, but for the soft clouded stature that belongs to this alien creature, which taste is only permitted to the fortunate few occupying the native islands of Hawaii. Another perplex root in the tree of my culture is Lei-making. The breathtaking row of an aligned set of flowers to form the Lei is one of the prime connections to the base of the hawaiian culture by contributing to the ancient craft itself. A more well-known phenomenon that had one of its origins among the islands of Hawaii and is still dwelled upon to this day is surfing.…

Little bit of Yankee, little bit of Ya’ll. Maybe a catchy t-shirt slogan, but not necessarily untrue. Having lived half my life in both New England and the South, I often feel like a combination of my two home experiences. This can be a little unsettling: up North, I’ve “turned Southern”, but down South, I’m definitely a Northerner. Though sometimes difficult, I’ve grown to like the alternate viewpoints I’ve gained living in different locations.…

Darwyn forces me to my knees in front of the fireplace. He holds me down as Arjan walks to the fire. He gives me a sinister glance as he pulls a large, iron rod from the depths of the hot, red coals. On the end of it was a serendipitous shape. It had a square with a circle on the inside.…

Out of nowhere three doe’s come running through the woods and stopped about 15 yards in front of my stand I looked over to my dad standing and he told me not to take the shot and to wait. My dad new from experience there was more to see, so I waited and watched the three does slip away from my sight. I felt bummed out, because, that could have been the moment I was waiting for I could have made the shot and watched all of my hard work pay off. I waited; there was nothing for at least another ten minutes. But then, we heard something my heart started pounding again, my dad told me to get ready, so I stood up and got my bow ready, I was so excited!…

To be an American is to be able to choose freely. Acts of terror seem to be more and more common, according to the media. In times of terror and strife the citizens of the United States of America come together no matter what beliefs and opinions we have to defeat the opposition. Secondly, America was built on immigrants, and as such we are open to diverse races and beliefs, and Americans consider people they have just met as friends. This is what I believe is my American Identity.…

We learned about the Native Americans in grade school, but I have come to know that we didn’t get the whole story or even the true one. My experience was amazing and I will have lifelong friends. Before we went on the 24 hour trip to Minnesota from University Park, we had a semester long course learning the ways of the people of Northern Minnesota’s’ Ojibwe tribe. We learned about the Ojibwe people’s hardships and about their triumphs. We learned about their religion and about their God.…
