Personal Narrative: The Last Day Of Cheerleading

Superior Essays
Walking into the gym, I could feel my heart pounding through my chest. My hands began to sweat, and my fingers ran quickly past one another. Dressed in blue soffe shorts and a white T-shirt, trying not to draw attention to myself, I slowly approached the large group of girls. Everything was so quiet, yet so loud. All I could hear was murmuring about what was about to occur within the next hour or two. It was the final day of cheerleading tryouts.
There were girls everywhere within the gym. Filling almost every empty gap or empty space within it. irls who bunched up with their friends, girls who were by themselves, and then there was me. Frantically looking around to see if I’d run across any familiar faces, one found me. My best friend, Jada,

The first group had gone out with numbers one, two, and three. I could hear them go through everything the chant, cheer, dance, and even their jumps. With each participant going out before me, I’d practice along with their group as they performed. Knowing that there were many experienced tumblers or returning cheerleaders, I began to doubt myself. Knowing that I was inexperienced when it came to anything dealing with cheer, especially jumps. “ I'm not going to make it,” I thought. There were fifty four girls here with just as much talent as I had.
We all had one opportunity to show these judges we belonged on the team. So, I’d have to work two times harder to get everything as close to perfect as it could be. Putting a big, yet fake smile on my face, I went through the chant again. Starting low right-v, clap, low left-v, clap, make a k, clap, and end with high-v. After about five times of going through the chant, I returned to the cheer. The words begin to flow smoother as I would repeat them over and over again. Tightening my arms and going through every move, I slowly gained confidence with what I was

We were next. Standing behind the large double doors, my group member, Chasity, stood in front of me waiting on the cue. Within the next couple of minutes, coach had signaled the cue to come out into the gym. Putting my hands on my hips, throwing the biggest smile on my face, I walked into the gym to the marked x. It was very quiet, and the judges sat as if they were statues in their seats. My smile begin to tremble as I waited on Chasity to call the chant. As we went through the chant, my adrenalin rushed through my body. There were mixed emotions going through my head.“ Hey fans we’re back and we’re ready to win, come on crowd lets hear’em yell, Go.Fight.Win.” It was almost over. Music from Ariana Grande filled the gym as we went into the dance. Doing quite better than I thought, I began smiling very hard. We both had finished our jumps, starting with toe touches and ending the jump of our desire. Afterwards, the judges begin to tally and score our performances. It was now time to go

During practice we worked in a group with the individuals and the bond that was developed helped the athletes in opening up and becoming comfortable around the coach, volunteers, and other family members. Positive reinforcement was used with smiles, good vibes, and kind words which was a reflection on how the athletes performed in practice and at…

When we saw our coaches we loaded the bus with the equipment and ourselves. When we arrived at Upper Perk, 15 minutes later, we unloaded and walked to the field. Since I was co-captain and our captain was out with a concussion, I was leader and led the team out to right field for stretching. While we were warming-up, Upper Perk’s team walked out. As soon as they started to stretch, the teams started to have a “which team is the loudest” contest.…

When I arrived at my enormous new high school for cheerleading auditions, I got lost. It was June, and since classes had just ended, crowds of kids filled the hallways, and I got bumped around like I did not exist. Thankfully, a cheerleader saw me and figured that I had come there for tryouts since I wore shorts, cheer shoes and a big bow in my hair. She took me to the gym where at least sixty girls had shown up to compete. The first thing I saw was cheerleaders doing high level tumbling with no fear.…

I was so happy I was near the front of the line because I wanted to stand out and make them remember me. While sitting there group after group kept going in it was getting close to my turn. While lined up behind these huge gray doors waiting for the judges to call us in, I didn’t think I could make it. My knees started shaking and I felt the butterflies in my stomach going crazy. Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

My nerves and anxiety had passed; I stood tall, confident in my abilities and all the preparations I had done for the audition. Afterwards, I was very proud of my performance, but I didn’t know if it was enough to earn a seat in the ensemble. Upon finding out that I did not make it into the choir, I was crushed. I felt like my months of hard work had been ruined and I would be a disappointment to my family. I vowed that I wouldn’t waste my time with auditioning for the chorus again the next year.…

The crowd screams, the lights shine, the music starts, and I preform my heart out. This was my life three years ago. I was a competitive all-star cheerleader for a gym called Premier Cheer. I cheered competitively for about eleven years and even won a national championship in 2011. 2013 was my last year cheering because every cheerleader has an expiration date; I aged out of the sport and my body ached too much to keep going.…

I have participated in the all-star competition cheerleading world since I was a very young girl. Over the last ten years, cheerleading has not only taught me how to stunt, tumble and dance, it has also taught me so many remarkable life lessons, such as leadership, teamwork, determination, and perseverance. One important lesson I have learned over the years is how to overcome failure as well as learning to control the fear of failure. The all-star cheerleading industry is very competitive; one small mistake in a routine can make an incredible impact on the outcome of the competition.…

I used to be so afraid of failure that I wouldn’t even challenge myself. I thought it was better to excel in classes that I knew I could pass than to challenge myself and accept the grade I earned. Cheer taught me that being a student-athlete doesn’t mean that I have to take the easy way out. I took my first AP class during my junior year and was able to ace it using the qualities I learned through cheer. I even challenged myself further by taking two college courses and an AP class during my senior…

“Both her preschool and kindergarten teacher reported that Kaytin was socially adept and often too concerned with the activity of others. Because of being so socially in tune, Kaytin resisted utilizing recommended devices, such as a special seat cushion, out of fear of appearing different.” The desire of the acceptance of peers is extremely common for everyone, especially adolescents, and I am not an exception of this. Consequently, since the age of five, I have been changing aspects of what I do in my life so that I would seem similar to everyone else. Evidently, high school was no different, as I finally feel accepted as a cheerleader, I fear that breaking what is expected could ruin that for me.…
