During Michigan winters I look forward to February, because it’s filled with celebration of my culture. Black History Month evokes a strong sense of pride. However, since entering high school every February has been a greater disappointment than the last as Black History Month was nothing more than a fleeting thought and a tokenized moment. Feburary of my junior year began without a single poster, announcement, or even small speech. So, I decided to lead a project to bring recognition.…

We were taken to the hospital to nurse us back to health. When we arrived there I was taken to a blue and white room and was instructed to lay down and take rest. The bed had dark blue covers and was less than comfortable. The nurse attached me to an IV and left the room to bring me some food. As soon as she left I yanked the IV off and limped to a small glass window.…

During the eighteen years I have lived my experiences have been fairly sheltered. I have never traveled out of the country, eaten exotic foods, or gone skydiving; consequently, I haven’t met many people of special interest. Not to say the people I have met are not interesting, on the contrary, most of the people I have come to know all have their own unique stories and experiences; however, I never did meet anyone quite like Miss May. To this day I can’t pinpoint what exactly it was about her that intrigued me so much, maybe it was her rich brown hair and almond-shaped eyes, or how she pronounced candy more like “kehn-dee”, or it definitely could have been the way her eyes lit up when she smiled—still she will always remain a mystery to me.…

It is crazy to think that America went through these time. It is sad to know that many people from all over had to go through this experience, especially African-Americans. You are definitely right to think that anyone who trusted in the separate but equal statement were out of their minds, and i also agree. I am also thankful that we as American have taken huge steps in bettering our ways of thinking and have moved forward since…

“Y’all come back again real soon” reached my ears as I jumped into the car to travel back to my home in Florida. For the last several days, my Aunt Sarah had hosted me in her charming South Carolina home. As the house grew smaller and smaller in my rearview mirror, I recollected her welcoming, generous spirit. Each morning, my aunt would awake before dusk to put together a delicious breakfast of egg casserole, cheese grits, country ham, homemade biscuits with lingonberry jam and a side of ambrosia. Later, each night she would escort me to my well-appointed bedroom, where I could snuggle into a soft, down-filled comforter on my lovely, antique bed.…

I remember the first time my mother took me to get my hair straightened. I clenched her hand as we walked into the salon. Beautiful women lined every station, bickering about their husbands, gossiping about neighbors, all managing to stay intertwined in every conversation. It was rapid; it was raw, it made me smile. I remember the smell, the fetid ooze of creams wafting over the stations.…

Words are merely a conjunction of jumbled letters. We still rely on its usage, as our existence micro aggressions through them. But, though essential to understanding our past, they cannot encapsulate our inexplicable thoughts and emotions. As an African American female, there is a constant battle with being able to feel as if you are enough. Society makes black women feel as if her skin is not beautiful, as if God did not take his time creating her melanin and the course of her hair. They label us as loud, aggressive and incompetent. On the other hand, you have people that look just like you, who fight the same battle as you against the world, and they make you feel as if you are not worthy either. Therefore, I’m left with the question “What is my purpose?”…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school. My first encounter with this whole move, and experience this new…
