*Sigh* It's that time of year again and no I'm not talking about the joys of Black History Month. It's February, which means good old Valentines Day is getting ready to rear its ugly commercialized head in every aspect of our lives. From being visually assaulted in the drug store while grabbing tampons, or losing your mind trying to get the latest themed Makeup Collection; Valentines Day can drive you crazy if you aren't crazy in love. For me, this time of year is particularly painful as it was this time last year I was dumped by my EX only a few weeks after I moved to NYC. Not only was a single with no friends, I didn't have the self-love necessary to see the blessing of being alone. It's important to take each season of our lives as it is, not as we want it to be. This Valentine's day consider me your Blogger Beyonce! I'm calling all my single ladies (and gents) to "worry bout yo self"! In our season of singlehood, let's stop looking for someone else to love and let's start loving ourselves. Here are five easy (and affordable) ways to do just that: …show more content…
Clearing out your room/apartment/home is both beneficial for physical and mental reasons. Obviously, it's easier to be relaxed when you aren't scared of stepping on a lego, but there is a sense of calm that enters your space when everything is orderly. Yes, I know I sound like my mother. The bigger benefit to cleaning up shop it having the ability to get rid of anything from the past ( like those socks your ex left.....) it is the physical representation of starting over as you literally make space for the next chapter in your life or more shoes(I won't …show more content…

Throughout my lifetime, there has been moments of laughter as well as grief. But a moment in my life that was pivotal was when I first felt the love of my life, at the moment, fade away slowly from me and sort of detach from our relationship. The song by Christian Nodal- “Adios Amor” showed me how at times when the love fades between partners to the point where there is no love at all, you have to do your best to move on rather than spending time grieving the love that is lost. Therefore, the song “Adios Amor” gave me the tough realization that some relationships are best to let go of if they don’t work as a young adult, and will continue to guide me throughout my life.…

I’ve always seen myself as a realist. I try to plainly say things as I see them with as little bias as possible. Alongside that I have also given my best effort to try and see things from other perspectives. There is always another way to look at life and all of its bits and pieces and I love challenging myself to do so. Frankly however, it is far from easy.…

February is Black History Month in the United States. In the mainstream media, at least in 2008, not much has been said to remind people of this fact. Perhaps it has been overshadowed by the presidential race (which itself is historical), or other celebrity news which, unfortunately, leads to ratings and ad dollars. My 10-year old son asked me - no, begged me - to write a Hub about Black History Month.…

I have spent a lot of time exploring what it means to be black in America and to be a woman. With a journalism career spanning 17+ years as a writer and editor, I established myself as a trusted music historian, cultural critic and impenetrable voice of my generation. I have interviewed Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Common and numerous others while examining Hip Hop as a sociopolitical movement along with analyzing contemporary black culture and urban life for The Chicago Defender, HipHopDX, Soul Train and numerous other media outlets. After many years of living my dream, I became disgruntled and decided to pursue my life long goal to earn my college degree. I returned to Harold Washington College in my beloved hometown of Chicago and went…

I believe an important issue facing California is negating Asian-Pacific Islander American Heritage Month, celebrated during the month in May. Why is that everyone remembers African-American Heritage Month and Hispanic Heritage Month? Is it because we resemble the most to white person? Well, not to be rude, but we went/go through the same struggles as you. This is important because we don’t want people to simply forget about us and for those of Asian/Pacific Islander descent to forget about their heritage.…

I believe there are no words that can describe the African American experience from throughout 1609-1865. Although if I were to choose one word to describe African American history at the time I would it as a dark time for African Americans because many slaves were beaten to death abandoned on ships and some did not survive the ruff life of slavery. By 1850, ninety-two percent of all American blacks lived in the South, and about 95 of the 92 percent were slaves. The Societies of the North and South were very different. Pre-civil war slaves in America went through a great deal of chaos and sadness in the South.…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school.
