Personal Narrative: The Joy Of Driving

Improved Essays
One of the many joys of growing up is finally scoring your license. There is nothing like being able to drive wherever you want, whenever you want. The teenage years have their disappointments but driving is not one of them. Driving is a very enjoyable activity to me because of the urge to just drive around, the adult feeling that driving gives me, and the independence that comes with it.
My chronic boredom has been cured with just a set of keys and an opportunity to go anywhere and do something incredible. I drove my first BMW when I was 20 years old; my boss at the time let me drive his E39 530i home. It was the most amazing thing I had ever drove and decided right then I must have a BMW once I made enough money to afford one. It was fast (to me), handled like it was on rails, quiet, comfortable, and everything a person who loves to drive could really ask for at the time; truly a “the ultimate driving…

The whole story begins with my older brother.…

I've always heard that drivers should practice "defensive driving. " It makes sense, we all know how big a car is and how fast it can go, you can find all of those numbers somewhere on the car itself. We all know someone who has been in an accident, be it minor or major. When cars collide, it can be catastrophic and everyone knows it well. But somehow, at least for me, the idea of it actually all being real didn't happen until I had gotten into an accident where I was forced to deal with the consequences of even a minor collision.…

When I ride it's like the earth stops at every corner so I can check to make sure a, loud, car isn't roaring towards me. It's like that feeling in your chest that tells you that everything is going to be ok, yet your mind is screaming at you that it won't be. I ride because I was thought that you need to be active in life, but it was never about the one hour of activity time we are supposed to have growing up. it was much more than that. I didn't need help to ride, I needed help to face down my enemies, or conquer my dreams.…

It was at this point where we would hop out of the truck and switch seats. Pa doesn't trust me yet to drive on the highway but I know I'm…

After five hours under Mrs. Gonzalez’s 1997 Plymouth, my hands were so dirty I had to wash them ten times just to see my fingernails again. She was a familiar face around the shop, given that neighborhood thieves had routinely targeted her car. This time, though, they had gone too far. Someone had crawled underneath the car and cut out the valuable catalytic converter, and she couldn’t afford a replacement. When I looked at her and said, “That’ll be $563,” her face turned pale.…

The alarm goes off at 8:15 AM like every morning. I roll out of bed, shower, slap on some sunscreen, put on my uniform, and head to work. Getting there, of course, is simple. I hop in the car, punch the button to start the engine, put the windows down to feel the summer breeze, plug in my phone to blast my go-to driving playlist, and I’m ready. Before I set off to lifeguard, a voice reminds me of what my grandma said when I first began driving, “I’m not afraid of you driving, I’m afraid of other drivers.”…

It was a very nice summer evening, the sun was just starting to set behind us as I drove down the highway. Without a worry, the music was blaring and there was a lot of singing and laughing going on in the car. Three of my friends and I were on our way to a movie in Spirit Lake, when the trip took an unexpected turn. Now, instead of going to the movie, I was going to have to go to court.
