Personal Narrative: The Journey To Colorado

We began the journey to Colorado in a hot, unairconditioned car. My shirt was sticking to my back and there was literally steam coming out of my ears because my blood was boiling with fury and anger. Out of all the days in life, I needed some peace, and thanks to God, I experienced it at the end of a long drive and a hike up the mountain with my cousins and siblings. The peace I experienced on top of the mountain was like no other. Standing on the edge looking at the beautiful landscape was a breath taker. The thin air was difficult to adapt to in the beginning, but it was the type of air that was of the purest. The air smelled so clean like a good air freshener smell that makes you want to take long deep breaths, but you just can’t

“Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

President Barack Obama once said “When all American are treated as equal, no matter who they are or who they love, we are all more free.” As a Hispanic LGBTQ American, these words resonated with me. In my exposure to a plethora of cultures, in my personal experience and academic career, I have had the privilege to understand and further appreciate many lifestyles. Through these experiences, my mission: to serve toward compassion and respect, rather than intolerance and isolation, has remained clear. These past 8 years, Obama has been a champion for LGBTQ+ Americans.…

The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…

One thing that I am really excited to witness first hand is the food, and the Buddhist temples. Relief from Nature “Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb-nail….. Simplify, simplify….. ”-Henry David Thoreau, Walden. August 3, 2010: on this day I, a curious 11 year old who had never left the United States, boarded my Cathay Pacific flight from New York to Hong Kong. I had been waiting for this day to come since I found out about the trip 3 weeks before. My dad frequently traveled there for business and I had seen his pictures and videos of Hong Kong and had wanted to travel like him. Here was my opportunity. My dad had already flown down earlier on Sunday, so it was just my mom and I. I awoke from my restless night to my mom gently shaking me, and telling me to get ready.…
