In addition to working for Givens, I was also a volunteer, which involved reading to the residents, taking them to and from meals and activities, as well as leading activities with the residence.…

My eighty-three year old grandfather handed me an overwhelmingly thick book titled “Sheils Family History” and said, “Here; look through this. Maybe you’ll run into one of these people.” I suppressed a laugh, thinking of the near zero probability of me “running into” one of my distant family members as I travelled abroad for the next two weeks. However impatient, I sat quietly listening to my grandpa chirp away about our ancestors and his war stories, while I pictured myself for the next fourteen days in a completely new place.…

Growing up in a family that did not communicate that much, I was not very close with my mother of father. My mom and I did tend to talk more but not about personal things in our life. Me and my dad however always fought. I have a few good memories with him (he loved teaching me how to make home made biscuits.) which I always enjoyed on those rare occasions he was in a good mood. But, 90% of the time we were fighting.…

My grandfather, Jerry, grew up with peanut butter on everything. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and sandwiches always had a hefty slab of peanut butter. My grandfathers family did this because they were poor and it helped make the food more filling. He continued the tradition and raised his children with peanut butter on everything. It took his kids awhile to start enjoying it but once they did they would always ask for the delicious sweet spread on everything!…

I have lived a blessed life filled with many great days. I have several of these days that particularly stick out in my mind such as the day my brother was born, the first day of my seventh grade play, the evening when I graduated, and the birth of my niece at four in the morning, but the day I hold above all of these was the day I spent with my extended Sanders family at the Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City. The first reason why I treasure this day exceedingly much is that it was spent with a family that I have never gotten to see regularly. The Sanders family is heavily involved in Christian ministry.…

It’s difficult for me to put a finger on a specific dream of mine because I still don’t know exactly what I want to do. All I know is that I want to be successful. Through the years, I’ve had countless people pour into me because they wanted me to find success in whatever I wanted to as well. One of the most influential communities of which I am a part is a summer family camp called Sandy Cove in Maryland. My family lives in a trailer park over the summer with roughly 25 other families.…

At 5 am, my father woke me up from my deep, sound dream. Albeit reluctant, I had to leave my bed and dress myself up quickly. February 18, 2016, it was the wedding day of my stepmother’s only son, Ying Lin. Given that Ying was the oldest male heir in his Lin clan—a traditional mercantile family in a coastal town of Fujian province, China, it was not surprising that everything about him was under spotlight. His wedding had become the top story in the area.…
