Personal Narrative: The Inside Ride Scholarship

As a member of the Inside Ride Organizing Committee at Mentor College, I assisted to organize, advertise and execute the 2015 Inside Ride cycling event that raised over $50,000 for childhood cancer patients and advancing research. The Inside Ride is an annual fundraising event that my school, Mentor College, has every year in memory of a student who passed away battling cancer in 2010. Having known that student, I felt a deeper connection to the cause and and joined this committee to help raise awareness for childhood cancer and contribute to the success of this event. The event took several months of planning to ensure that everything would run smoothly. I truly felt that the success of this event would display the amount of effort, time, dedication and hard work that it took which only made the other students and I work harder to achieve what we set out to do. All of our efforts were rewarded during the event when we were able to witness the members of our school community dancing and cycling in the event that we worked so hard to conduct. At the end of the day, the fundraised total was revealed, which amounted to over $50,000, pushing our to school to become the school with the highest funds raised in all of Canada over 5 years. Aside from that, I believe that the most rewarding aspect of the entire experience is the feeling of knowing that I am helping solve a larger problem. Childhood cancer is something that no one should be affected by and knowing that I helped to diminish that problem is the most rewarding feeling as it encourages me to continue assisting and organizing events similar to the Inside
