Personal Narrative: The Incline Club

Superior Essays
It all happened in an instant, I was at one of my favorite places to be, The Incline Club. I am a young skateboarder, but quite good. I can flip, twist, turn or anything really. I love the mini bowl. That is where I learn all of my tricks like stalls, rocks, or even gaps. I especially love the foam pit. My favorite thing to do is drop in on the ten footer and then with all my speed fly right off of my board and flip and turn. My main trick is I will leap off of my speeding board in mid air then I will do a 720 double front flip. I can do most obstacles like drop ins, gaps, grinds, and airs. I go to lessons every Sunday with Joe, my skateboard instructor, which I think of as an older friend. I don’t go to lessons because I’m bad but because I basically have the whole park to myself. It is literally empty and I can do whatever I want, as I am also learning new tricks. …show more content…
As I approach the park I see there's a whole new setup. They made something called the dubbles. That is when they have one ramp, and then behind the ramp there is another ramp, so its like you go up the ramp then air, go down, up then air again. It looked so fun. I did it my first time except I got about one inch of air. Of course practice makes perfect so I just keep trying for a couple of days. I’m not scared of the dubbles because all of my times doing it I have never gotten to hurt, only a little bit of crashes, or slipping, but definitely nothing to

I got soaked. We had to take our hands off the rail and we went swirling like a tornado and a spiral. At the end, there was a huge bump and we went down the smooth surface Finally, we crossed the bump, but at the very end of the ride, we went really high and touched the black rubber path at the very top of the ride. I finally thought that the ride was amazing to go on. My thoughts before were wrong.…

I decided to go on a bike ride with my adult cousin and his kids that I know well. Anyway we were riding past the Rec and we saw the skate park. Skating offers freedom in allowing skaters to create something out of nothing. Musician and former skater, Ian Mackaye, summarizes this common mindset about skating in saying, “Skateboarding is not a hobby. And it’s not a sport. Skateboarding is a way of learning how to redefine the world around you. It’s a way of getting out of house, connecting with other people, and looking at the world through different sets of eyes.”…

" Skateboarding is a very popular sport, but it carries many stereotypes and stigmas. Many people believe that the world of skateboarding is full of drugs and vandalism, but it is simply a recreational activity. There are two types of skateboarding, street skating, which involves many tricks with the skateboard, and ramp skating. I prefer to skate on a ramp. At my house, I have a half pipe.…

As I took my first step onto my local skatepark, the only thing that crossed my mind was “no way anybody skates that.” I was referring to the fourteen stair that was right in front of the entrance. Covered in pads with my skateboard in hand, I walked over to the seemingly endless drop and stared in bewilderment. “No way, this is huge. Maybe a pro could do this but that’s…

It’s no lie that the outside world (non-participants) views skateboarding as negative, risky, delinquent behavior. I used to hate the sport, it seemed ridiculous and a waste of time. However, I’ve changed my mind, and I have to thank an honors thesis at University of South Florida Scholar Commons for shedding some light on the subject. The author, who is a skateboarder himself, describes the world of skateboarding through two lenses. First, he analyzes what skateboarding means to him…

My vision started to fail on mile four of the six-mile hike. Small white specks flickered across my field of vision. I should have stopped myself, but all I could think was: you will finish this, or you will die trying.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

While acting as a skater, I realized that I am not too far from a skater myself; though there is a significant difference between a skater and me. As noted by my friend earlier, " I see no difference..." I concluded the only difference between a skater and me is that I do not know how to skateboard: This, I view, is one of the most important things that a skater should know how to do. Although being a skater is fun, I enjoy being who I am. This project has helped me understand that, frequently, I judge someone based on their appearance, how they act, and what they're wearing at the time, and that I need to change the way I get to know…
