Personal Narrative: The Hunt

The Hunt
I am all warm in my camo attire with my bow hugging the tree behind me. I watch as sky comes to life and leaves crunch as the dew falls on them. My father sitting at my right side, dozing, his head bobbing every once in awhile. I hear the faint noise of something crunching and look above me to see a squirrel perched on a small branch. I smile and nod my head letting out a faint chuckle. I take a look at my beautiful surroundings for any movement that would catch the arrow of my bow. I try my best to wait patiently for a dear to march through the leaves. I wiggle in anxiousness. I can no longer wait. My father wakes from his nap, turning to his right. He jabs his elbow into my rib. I wince in pain, still trying to be as silent as possible.

His body moves without thought, instincts becoming all that he knows. The hunted recognizes this rhythm of feet pounding the ground, knows it better than his own heartbeat.…

Her finger weekend on the trigger. Still, she nodded at what her father said and sighted again, the cross hairs lining up in exactly the same spot- the doe had hardly moved, its brownish-gray body outlined starkly against the blue-backed snow. It doesn’t know, Andy thought. It just doesn’t know. And as she looked, deer and snow and faraway trees flattered within the circular frame to become like a picture on a calendar, not real, and she felt calm, as if she had been dreaming everything- the day, the deer, the hunt itself.…

“Alright now Skin, I need you to be my leadoff here and get a rally going!” I do not respond, because I obviously know how important this one at bat is for the team and for myself. One thing coach loves doing, making sure I know how much I am accountable for. There is no comment to explain to me of how dependent I am on these upcoming moments for the team, so don’t make it any worse. To start off and to have the power to set the tone of the whole inning.…

As I took hold of the gun the overwhelming feelings flooded over me, I heard the whispers of the trees echo through my head. Reminiscing the last time I aimed a fire arm, the last time I was caught. I took a step closer to the gravel and dirt road, my heart slowed as my breath caught in my throat I glanced around, the trees danced on the gravel, with a whistle. The heat waves radiated the yellow light from the afternoon sun as it set over yonder. Taking in a breath that filled my lungs, I took another step forward releasing the inhale letting the nerves fade out slowly.…

Earlier this month, I was searching the web for a science camp/program for this summer. After turning over what seemed like every stone, I could not find a program that was both hands-on and a reasonable price. However, a few Google searches later, and I came across this great program offered by Jefferson. When I read the program description to my parents; they were in shock at what I could potentially be doing this summer. But how did I get interested in this program in the first place?…

One year ago, on January seventh I learned not to take even some of the worst situations for granted. Sitting in the white minivan, I anxiously waited for my mom who stood on the porch pacing back and forth, while listening to my hungry, screaming little sisters. She received a phone call while we were walking out the door of the oral mouth surgeon, after getting a quote for the total price of the pulling of my sisters wisdom teeth would be. As I watched her, she had kept her back turned towards the wall , and I could feel something way down in the pit of my stomach. I looked back towards her and saw her coming down the stairs to the door to come get in the car, and I could tell she had been crying, even though she had her sunglasses to try and hide it.…
