Pacing back and forth, I pondered how our volleyball fundraiser was going to stay afloat. The council was distraught, unable to acquire more teams, with the tournament in two days. With our advisors and the vice principal leaning towards canceling the event, my council had two choices: get eight more teams to sign up or call off the event. I didn’t want to cancel because I knew that as Junior and Senior year approached, we needed more money to fund our proms and class trips.…

Devastation filled me, but it was eventually replaced with hope. Not hope for me to be able to compete on the third day but rather for another competitor to get the chance to compete like she deserved. The girl’s horse who was ranked fifteenth was hurt, so she was unable to compete because she did not have a horse. Sorrow flooded over me at the thought that neither of us would be able to compete the next day. I immediately insisted that she use my horse in competition the next day because it simply felt wrong to me that she would not be given a fair chance at fulfilling one of her goals as…

I once thought I couldn’t believe in myself! I felt as if I were nothing but a sheet of glass that was completely useless. When there were gloomy days, I felt like broken glass that was scattered all over the ground and I wouldn’t be fixable. As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Ultimately, the whole day is long and if you wear heels, the day seems way longer. Similar to the previous day, there were multiple races leading up to the 142nd annual Kentucky Derby. For the most part, the races leading up to the derby were small therefore, I was determined to place a wager. Deciding that I had a better prospect on collecting money if I waged on a horse to show, I did just that. Overall, I made a profit of $30 which, considering my betting experience, was a success.…
