Personal Narrative: The Horrific Historic Flood

As I remember the days of the tragic Historic Flood that happen on August 13, 2016; in Baton Rouge, LA many of my family members, and friends were affected, and it was very devastating and terrifying all at once. Even though I myself wasn’t affected as much by the Historic Flood I still endured a lot of emotional disbelief for my family and friends. I felt heart broken by what was actually happening to my family and friends, all I could think about at the time was lending out any help I could to make things a little better. I can remember receiving a horrifying call early that morning before the red skinny bird in the tree beside my window would chirp. It was my younger brother DeMontreal and my older brother Treal calling, I could hear so much tension and frustration in his voice about the water rising very quickly up to his apartment complex. He was on the bottom floor of the complex, and he had my new born nephew DeMontreal Jr. with him, my heart was pounding uncontrollably. I quickly jump out of my bed stumbling over my phone charger, rushed to put on some pants on in my pitched dark room and immediately went to their rescue. The water hadn’t risen any around my area just yet, so I was able to make it to them barely; going through different neighborhoods just to avoid the deep waters. Finally, I made it to them full of surprised to actually see the water rising quickly to their apartment complex. While making a phone call panicking; yelling loudly to them, that I only …show more content…
The power was out for a couple of days, but we manage to make it through thanks to my boyfriend who went out his way to find portable fans to make sure my nephew had air. Through it all I hate that the Historic flood happened, but that terrible time brought out the best in everyone, to bring everyone together as one to lend out any

I think the Johnstown, Pennsylvania flood of 1889 is the most significant flood (in U.S. history) because it was the first major disaster relief effort for the Red Cross. The Red Cross was formed in 1881 and was primarily a battlefield relief organization. Thus, the Johnstown flood was the first peacetime relief effort for the Red Cross. The news coverage of the flood helped establish the Red Cross as the agency we know today. The Red Cross, led by founder Clara Barton, arrived to Johnstown only five days after the flood.…

The residents of Louisiana are still recovering from what has been called the greatest natural disaster since Hurricane Sandy: a flood causing considerable damage to the region in this August 2016. It’s true that a large portion of Louisiana is made up of lowlands prone to flooding, but this instance was particularly noteworthy because of the power of the weather and the magnitude of water deposited. The floodwaters beat record highs by as much as 5 feet in some areas, and thousands of people were left without homes. The recovery period is not expected to be quick, as Louisiana’s geography does not allow for easy drainage. Louisiana’s population will be feeling the effects of the flood for a long time to come.…

However, most people have similar ways of coping. After a disaster, an individual or family want to go back to their way of life as soon as possible and want a sense of stability through the process. In previous class material we looked at how families in Grand Forks, North Dakota coped with their disaster. For many of the women, they chose to live their lives as close to the way they were before the flood. They sent their children to school as soon as they could, tried to find their children 's friends so they had familiar faces, cooked their families favorite dinners, planted their favorite flowers, and got involved with their church communities.…
