Personal Narrative: The Halo Race

Improved Essays
It was a cool autumn morning as I ran around the neighborhood. I tried to run as fast as I could because I knew there were tasty, chocolate donuts waiting for me. I ran by my best friend ,Harley, who was working out like always. I came home and I knew to never cheat like those desperate people who want to win, but to always be honest
“Raymond!! You’re finally old enough for the Halo Race!” screamed Squeaky running down the stairs.
“I know, I can’t wait for you to train Harley and me”, I replied excitedly.
I wondered to myself, “What the race is going to be like.” Just like old times Squeaky is excited for running season. Last year she beat her enemy, Gretchen, at the May Day race. Unusually they made up and became friends. I left to go to

We were walking home when my conscious told me to tell Harley how I feel. I decided to take it slow and hold her hand. She looked at me with her sparkly, blue eyes and the cool autumn breeze blowing her silky, soft, brunette hair. Harley was talking about the race, but I didn’t understand much because I couldn’t stop staring at her. I remembered Squeaky was waiting for us at the circle, so we quickly walked there. I saw Squeaky in her unique track suit while I changed into my practice clothes. We all met up in the middle of the circle and Squeaky explained to us what we would be doing today at practice.
While Squeaky was setting up the tall, bright, orange cones I whispered to Harley, “Squeaky always brags about her past races and how she was undefeated.”
“Well, I think she just misses the sport, especially after her incident”, commented Harley. “Yes, it must’ve been rough going through the surgery and missing the world championships”, I agreed. Squeaky approached us and roared, “Run a lap NOW!” Harley beat me, but I didn’t worry because it was only practice. “Laziness: when I was your age I was faster than the wind. Remember Raymond at the May Day race? I ran like a cheetah and beat Gretchen, then Raymond came running to me. That’s when I knew another Williamson runner was discovered”, blabbered Squeaky while staring off into space. “We know!” I sighed. “ Okay, then run two more laps. GO!GO!GO!” shouted

Then, however, when she is in position at the starting line, that feeling goes away, and she focuses on mentally and psyching herself up. Squeaky tells herself repeatedly that she can win, and reminds herself that she can also probably beat her father in a race if she really wanted to. This is important because it shows that she is confident in herself and believes in herself, she believes that she can win the race and beat her dad (the only one who can beat her) if she really tried to. Anyone can do anything if you believe in yourself. Squeaky can beat anyone in a race if she really tried…

Right after Squeaky and Gretchen cross the finish line and the race ends, they have to wait for some time while the judges decide who won. During this time, Squeaky has time to think about and process Raymond’s first run. Squeaky was amazed at this because she had never seen Raymond run before, and more importantly, he was keeping up with her. She began to see Raymond as more than something to look after, more than a job that she was in charge of.…
