Personal Narrative: The Great Debate

I look to my right at my opponent who has just finished his speech and sits back down with a smug smile on his face. I glance at my paper where I jotted down swift notes during his speech. The clock is ticking as my prep time comes to an end and an idea rings through my anxious state. I add a couple more counter arguments while I try to find a loophole in the core idea of his case. The timer rings, ending my preparation time, and I stand up to begin my speech. This is the last round and I have four minutes to make the final argument to shut down his case. I take a deep breath and feel confidence bubbling up in my chest as I turn to face the judge.

There is truly no greater feeling to me than being in this exact moment. As nerve racking as it may be, the thrill of being in a debate round is a truly liberating experience.
I love debate because it gives me the opportunity to think and solve, the world of logical fallacies is intriguing to me. At the same time, it gives me an appropriate platform to discuss many social and political issues.

As a child, I would wake up every morning excited for the riddle of the day my father would give me. I

Debate has allowed me to cultivate this passion while still teaching me important lessons. The pressure of having to come up with arguments on the spot and refuting your opponent’s position trained me to gain a quicker response time. It has also taught me how to be open minded through having to debate both the affirmative and negating side. Lincoln Douglas specifically appeals to me because it centers on controversial topics and their morality. For instance as a debater on an Organ donation topic I would have to persuade the judge that my side (pro/con) is more morally acceptable. Debate has educated me about my world and the way that ethics interacts with it more than any other class in high

After recording my arguments for two days, I found that the purpose of most of my arguments was to try and convince the other person that my ideas were right and the best choice. In total I made six arguments where my purpose was to convince the other party. The six arguments I made are as follows; The best pokemon go team is Mystic and not Valor or Instinct, that 9/11 was not an inside job nor was it done by president Bush, that we need stricter gun control laws, that Trump should not be president, and that the education system for grades 12 and lower should be changed and made to be more practical for life.…

The debate of the creation of the Universe, has been going on since the first humans walked the Earth. We as humans are curious creatures, and always want to know all of the answers. In the Frank Turek vs. David Silverman debate they both believe they have the more realistic view of how the Universe came to be. These types of debates can get heated quickly not only between speakers, but between the audience members, too. That is why I really appreciated what the opening speaker asked the people in the audience to do.…

In his article “Argument as Conversation”, Stuart Greene attempts to purpose the proper way to make arguments into intellectual conversation. Whether you are in class, or spending some time with family, arguments usually happen and are a unique part of everyday life. As Greene states in the article, “Argument is very much part of what we do every day; We confront a public issue, something that is open to dispute, and we take a stand and support what we think and feel with what we believe are good reasons” (Greene 28). With that being said, Greene believes that arguments are already very much like a conversation. However, there are multiple things one must understand before joining such conversations.…

Hillocks offers many valid arguments in Chapter 7. He argues that "argument should be part of the educational program at early stages" (200). I agree with his statement because argumentative writing is not taught until middle and high school, and I feel that the younger students are when they learn the skills, the more opportunities they have for improvement.…

The Vice Presidential debate that occurred on October 4th 2016 was important to people across the united states. It is clear that many citizens are undecided on who to vote for, the point of this debate was to give clarity to voters and to reassure the American people of their views. I was hoping this debate would be better than the presidential debate however it seemed to be the same; Tim Kaine interrupting and Mike Pence constantly being on the defense. Despite the interruptions both candidates made a few good points that are essential to consider when making a decision. Both sides made strong arguments.…

I’m most proud of my three years in debate for three reasons: I became a better public speaker, it allowed me to expand my diction, and it taught me how to formulate better essays and speeches. Public speaking is the greatest skill that one can possess; it can be the difference between being respected or viewed as a coward. In order to be a great public speaker one must be able to utilize powerful language, so that he/she can persuade others to follow him/her. Finally, the last but not least important skill that I mastered was that I was able to formulate essays and speeches more effectively, and by possessing this skill I will be able to succeed in writing reports for both school and later in…

Question 1. As a result of watching the debates, I think that Hillary Clinton would be the best choice for president. There are a lot of reasons why she is the best choice for president and there are also a lot of reasons why Donald Trump should not be president. The most important reason that Hillary should be president to me is because she is honestly a much safer choice than Trump.…

This course has improved myself as a writer and has a critical thinker; with the essays that were written I was challenged to ask more questions and see the bigger picture on things and view a subject from all sides. I never wrote an argumentative essay before this course, so this course taught me what it was how to write one and what exactly I was looking for and what I would be able to improve on. I know there is still room for improvement, but taking this course has already made me a better writer from when I started. Writing argumentative essays would help improve many skills as an individual by learning how to approach important issues without taking a side and learning this would also help if a person was trying to prove a point…

In my opinion, there a lot of different aspects voters need to know about when voting for any seat, whether it be town council, mayor or President of the United States. There are hundreds of ideas and values that need to be addressed and in no way can they be addressed in one instance. Using these debates to inform the public about their views on popular issues such as abortion and torture is understandable, and I believe having multiple debates to discuss these matters are important. However, having debates to roast each other is a waist of time and does not help the public chose a president, in my opinion. Donald Trump spent a lot of time pointing fingers at Marco Rubio.…

The importance of presidential debates on voters is that it lets the voters know the candidates and their policies better, it also allows voters to see how they treat the other candidates or political figures. We see their personalities and policies when they are asked questions on the subject such as when Trump was asked about how he treats women or their plan to get the economy back on track. That part of the debate showed voters what kind of candidate Trump was and other questions showed voters about Hillary. Voters also learn more about and can compare plans and policies at one time while watching the debates. Finally, they show us how the candidates treat other candidates and political figures, if they treat the other terribly then voters…

Solely for the fact, that just me, as a reader can relate to Gloria Anzaldua’s, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” makes it more of a valid debate for me. We all have to sacrifice something in order to converge into the adult life we call “Public society.” Richard sort of felt his sacrifice was his true identity.…

Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…

Politics is the methods and tactics intended to influence government policy, policy-related attributes and activities (Ferris & Stein, pg. 287). During my life I never took into consideration the importance of politics until taking this sociology course. As shocking as this may seem, it is true. In fact, I always viewed voting as a way for people to choose the most popular candidate, as in the case with the current candidates running for president. I always felt a need to not participate or even bother registering to vote, since it did not matter who my vote would go to.…
