Personal Narrative: The Grand Canyon

Of all of the things that I remember from my childhood, my memories of visiting national and state parks are of my fondest. I remember everything from the games that my family and I played in the car, to stopping at a diner on Route 66. I could not pick one of the places we went to as my favorite because all of them seemed to have their own hidden beauties. One of the most memorable trips was when we visited The Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Arches, Zion, and Petrified Forest. Before I get started with the memories from the road trip I should first tell you about one of the main pieces in each of my memories: my brother Kyle. The basics about my brother are that he is two years older than me, he has brown hair, green eyes, and seems to always …show more content…
We decided to not take the hike down to the caves and just take the elevator because the hike would just take too much time and we had arrived too late in order to take the hike. We were packed in the elevator like sardines, it was not a pleasant ride on the way down. Stepping out of the elevator we were instantly standing beneath stalactites which just looked like more dangerous icicles. I was more fascinated with how there was an underground restaurant than exploring the caverns. After a few steps past the restaurant, the sheer size of the caverns was soon made apparent to me. We decided to have lunch at the underground cafeteria twenty minutes after eating my dad started feeling claustrophobic, he insisted that we stay and explore before he ascended the elevator. Now that it was just my brother, mother, and I we started walking around following along to the self-guided audio tour. After finishing the tour we ascended the elevator and stepped back into the light of day. We found my dad and got back on the road. We decided to go and check-in at our hotel and call it a …show more content…
When we got there and finally looked over the canyon the smoke from the forest fire that was burning made it to where the other side of the canyon could not be seen. It was pretty uneventful because what we went there to see was masqueraded by a smokescreen. Looking around at the other tourists nearby all of them shared the same look of disappointment. Their faces looked as if they just won a dollar on a game show when they could have won a million. The people who seemed the most disappointed were the ones from other areas of the world who had to go to great lengths to travel out to the Grand Canyon. Since the view was concealed in a thick layer of smoke we decided not to stay very long and just find another activity to do. We decided to go back into town and go putt-putting and then see a movie. After dinner that night we packed up most of our luggage so we could leave relatively early the next

As we made it to the backdoor we found an old, rusty ladder, that was used instead of stairs. We were hesitant to walk up the ladder at first, with rungs being in the shape that they were. Carl and Tom convinced me nothing bad was going to happen, and so I slowly crept up the ladder, at a snails pace, until I reached the…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

Over the summer, I went to the world’s oldest mountain range in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I explored the mountains that shaped America’s History. I saw the sights and sounds of this beautiful, diverse park. It may not have the tallest mountains, but they offer beautiful views, and are home to many animals. Also, it is the most visited national park because of its closeness to many people in the United States.…

The Great Smoky Mountains I had never smelt the mountains before. When I was planning my trip everyone who had been there before said, “Oh, that smell! You’ll never forget it!”. I always knew it would be an unforgettable trip I just never thought I would crave the mountains afterwards. I can still feel the cool, crisp air that I inhaled when I walked to the porch to watch the sunrise.…

Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……

We got to see stalagmites, stalactites, flowstones, chandeliers and soda straws. We took lots and lots of pictures because if I didn't slow my family, I feel like they wouldn't have believed me. We spent about half our day there, and then after that she took me to the San Antonio Zoo. That zoo was humongous, way bigger than the one in the valley. I saw monkeys, elephants, rhinoceros, lions, zebras, and even penguins.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

I sat on a rock watching a group of elementary school kids explore the natural world. They looked at fish, hopped on rocks and followed bugs to their hearts’ content. We were about a mile from our cabin, at the end of Christopher Creek before it went under the road. As a junior counselor, I probably went way out of my jurisdiction in taking my four campers on such a long trip down the creek, but their enjoyment was worth the potential trouble. I couldn’t believe it; none of them had ever taken a trip down a creek.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

Going there first wasn 't prioritized for me, but it was expected since the state was right next to Texas. I figured I would try to make the best of it, but knowing my luck, there probably wasn 't much I could do since we only stopped there for a two days. One of those days happened to be July fourth, and unfortunately none of the "Must-try" places were open. Thinking to myself, "it 's not a big deal". There 's so much more of the trip left that sulking over one thing I didn 't get to do wasn 't worth it.…
