Personal Narrative: The Game Of Golf

The soft green grass under my feet, the cool breeze running over me, the warmth of the sun shining its rays on my face...Lost in my thoughts of form and grip, contemplating yardage, angle and loft, dreaming of my future, I am at peace, I am on the golf course. When I was four years old, my dad put a club in my hand and a ball at my feet, since then, I have loved and despised the game of golf. From the moment I was introduced to the game, I was hooked and while many view it simply as ‘a game’, I have been fortunate enough to take much more away from the course. The game has seen me at my best and seen me at my worst. It has instilled in me many of the values and virtues that I carry out in my daily life. The game of golf

When playing bad, all it may take is a change in mindset or attitude to get one back on track. Sometimes it’s a little change in swing thought that will turn one’s round around.…

On Veterans Day 2014, I asked my dad if we could play a round of golf. Since I was a baseball fanatic at the timen, my dad was surprised by my question, but nevertheless he set up a round of golf for us. When I hit a ball off the first tee, I knew I had found a new, strong passion. Although my swing was horrible, I was determined to practice golf everyday to become better. I told my mom about my exhilarating experience on the golf course later that night, and I slowly began to realize that I loved golf more than baseball for its independent aspects, unique serenity, exquisite views, and diverse challenges.…

Golf is full of failure. I would get so mad when I couldn’t control the trajectory or end result of my shots. It was not uncommon for me to quit the round. As I matured, I came to realize that the failures gave me a chance to learn. Practicing a shot over and over again, I came to understand why each shot differed from my expectations.…

The experience that I went through and that I would like to share was when I played golf in the beginning of the year. I was fine managing my schedule during the first week or two of school, but then I started getting more and more homework as the weeks went on. I had a hard time keeping up with my school work and playing golf. I practiced every day after school and I didn’t really have any time after school to do my homework. Playing golf took up basically all of my time because I played it 5-7 days a week between practicing with the school team or practicing with my golf instructor/coach.…

I was standing by myself on the bright green tennis court, gripping my racket. Groups of other tennis players were leaning against the chain link fence, waiting, like me, for tryouts to begin. Listening intently to the conversation going on around me, I was trying to get absorbed into what was going on. After what felt like forever, but in reality was only minutes a friend of mine and returning player walked over to me. Having not seen each other in a month or so we both greeted each other enthusiastically.…

I was playing lacrosse on a warm spring day in Glen Ellyn. I could feel my adrenaline spike, accompanied by my heart beating out of my chest. We finally had the ball on our side. Every second we had possession was precious as we knew the opportunities to score would be few.…

If an activity does not make you break a sweat, or if it can be done while drinking and smoking, then it is not a sport.” Not only do golfers have carts to haul them and their gear around course, but they can participate in this activity with injuries unlike any genuine sport. Golfers also play while focusing on other things like social media while playing.
