It was June 1st 2011 and the afternoon seemed like every other spring month, calm and quiet. As the clock struck 4:03pm, all of this changed though. A tornado had just rampaged through my community and devastated the section of East Forest Park. My home was damaged, my neighborhood was left in pieces and my middle school/ future high school was left in ruins.
Within months, my community began to rebuild and it was stated that my high school (Cathedral High School) was to be rebuilt by the time I was a sophomore. With this information, I decided to attend Cathedral. Sadly however, progress on rebuilding the school had not yet started and the newly appointed bishop had qualms about the future of the school. He needed to see that the community was still supportive and that students and alumni were still passionate about the school’s future.

From our persistent actions, we were thus able to raise over $1.2 million for the endowment fund and set the wheels into motion for finally rebuilding our second

Throughout this story, the narrator is portrayed as an arrogant, self-obsessed man who is really only willing to see the world through his own judgmental, warped point of view. This type of person being a common character in many of Carvers writings, as pointed out by Carol Stern in her paper, “Cathedral: Overview” (Stern). Readers can see this in his behavior and the way he speaks depicted in the very opening paragraph of the story. The narrator describes his thoughts on this visitor coming to stay by saying, “I wasn’t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew.…

Gothic cathedrals stand as a tangible expression of the pious aspirations of the medieval people during the late 12th to the first half of the 16th century. The soaring architecture, like its adherents thoughts, ascend towards heaven solidifying the supreme authority of the Church over every aspect of life. Napavine Jr. Sr. High School, just like every other educational institution, has multiple stakeholders with whom we must deal. The challenges we face are the close proximity of our small school to the majority of community members and parents, and the intimacy and long-term shared experiences between staff, parents and students. While this creates a large familial bond, like any family, issues arise when people on all sides find themselves in a situation that requires a decision that might negatively affect the perceived familial relationship. At Napavine, we have teachers, parents, community members and students who have been in the community for all of their lives; and, we have those same stakeholders who have not. Division between stakeholder…

However, when an arsonist burned the mosque in Joplin, Missouri a year later, the city rallied behind their Muslim neighbors to offer support and help in rebuilding. Not all citizens were supportive of the fundraising efforts, posting anti-Islamic rhetoric on Facebook threads.…
