Our Foster dog almost died, was diagnosed with either/both leukemia and a stomach blockage of some sort, and then made a full recovery. We had a chance to have him put down, but I decided to give him more time and brought him home from the hospital with a prescription for Prednisone, which was expected to extend his life by maybe another 6 weeks. He’s in his third week now and, other than the shaved legs and belly, seems perfectly normal. Unfortunately, what I mean by normal is that during a thunderstorm last night, he clawed a screen door down to wood shavings and almost finished chewing his way through the front door, sort of an ongoing project due to all the storms we’ve had this summer. He is a genuine egg-sucking dog. We have watched him do it. He’s very artful, doesn’t spill a drop, just gently cracks the end off and then licks it dry. Yesterday he caught a squirrel by the back leg and snapped the leg plumb off. By the time we arrived, he was wolfing down the carcass whole except for the one splintered, footless rear leg, crunch, crunch, crunch.
