Personal Narrative: The Football Team

Last school year, as a junior, our football team was playing in the sectional championship game against Northwood. In the previous season we lost to the Northwood Panthers in the first round of the sectional tournament. Because of the previous attempt to beat a strong Northwood team I was feeling nervous, and almost even scared. During the beginning of the game it was a close battle and I could feel myself getting fatigued. I was unsure if I’d be able to play as hard as my team needed me to play for four full quarters. Our head coach, Coach Amstutz, told me, “We need you McCormick. It’s your time, get it done!”. “Okay, coach. Let’s do it.” I murmured through my mouthpiece. The first quarter came and went and it was now the second quarter. I remembered Amstutz’s short speech he gave me and realized I needed to bear down and help my team win a sectional championship. Northwood was a big, strong team, but despite that I held my own against them. I was running the ball well and throwing the ball well. In fact, we were winning half way through the second quarter. But the whole time I could tell that we as a team were slowing down, we were getting worn out and tired while Northwood, the team with more depth on their roster was stilling flying around, running fast, and playing physical. I was honestly in doubt. I knew we wouldn’t be …show more content…
Some were hurt, some were complaining, and some were even vomiting. I had never seen anything like this before. I talked with my quarterback coach, Abbs, telling him, “How are we expected to win this game when we are looking like this?” Coach Abbs replied with, “I know it seems close to impossible right now but you’re the leader. Rally your troops and they will follow you.” When Abbs told me that I didn’t know what to think of it. How was I supposed to get a group of close to 80 high school boys who all have minds of their own to follow a single person, in

In August of 1992, Rake’s team had a Sunday morning practice of all conditioning after a bad scrimmage the day before. Two miles was their “warm-up.” Then, the team ran bleachers, a workout dreaded by all Spartans. It was so dreaded that “when Rake yelled Bleachers, half the team wanted to quit” (Grisham 75). During the workout, sophomore Scotty Reardon collapsed on the bleachers “and never regained consciousness” (Grisham 76).…

Our first football game under lights took place at the Hayward youth football field. It was a very intense game against our rivals. We called it the rivalry game, because they are our rivals. The reason they are our rivals is because they have beat us in the championships prior to the year of this year’s 2016 summer season. When we got to the field, we watched the younger kids play before us.…

But it didn't look to good for us on there first drive they had a 30 yard pass down the field for a touchdown and that gave them a lot of momentum and confidence to keep going and at that moment everyone on my team had a discretion that we were gonna lose. After the game are coach was really angry at us and yelled at us and i can remember him looking right at me and specifically saying that “You’ll always be too small, you should quit. hWhich i didn't really have an understanding of why he was only really mad at me but i sorta had and idea because we hadn't lost this season and i was even mad at myself at the end of the game…

Playing football has always been a great passion of mine. Ever since I was little, I loved to watch and play football with my older brother and my dad. Going into elementary school, I would attend my brother's practices and watch excitedly from the sideline waiting my turn to go out and compete. I got my chance in second grade and I made the most of it. There were two teams in my grade and on the better of the two teams I was the quarterback which was exciting, but even better, I played my favorite position since I started watching football which was linebacker.…

Again, we needed to reinvent our path without changing our goals. Our training was going to be the most intense we had ever experienced as a team. Regardless of how I felt or how a practice went, I knew I had a responsibility to lead the team through the goals we set. This meant not only taking care of myself during practice, and maintaining academics, but also reaching out to those who struggled the most. This was a pivotal moment.…

After many time-consuming and demanding practices my team finally earned a place in the conference tournament for the first time in decades. The game was days away, but I could already feel the focus and intensity in the air. We were to play against Floyd, one of our biggest rivals; they were stacked with strong, confident players and would definitely come to win. I was only a sophomore, so I was surprised when my coach pulled me aside and said, “A scout from Emory and Henry…

It was a brisk fall evening with the sun just about to set behind a hill. I was 10 years old, playing in my third season of football, and my first ever game under the bright lights surrounding the high school stadium. The time had finally come, the lights had been on and warming up for several minutes, I was going to play a game under the lights on the high school field. My experiences that night were not forgotten, but today I couldn’t even tell you if we won the game that night. The lessons I learned that night weren’t about winning and losing, I had done plenty of that already in my life.…

I used to be a shy and quiet girl but since joining the summer camp I started to socialize and have friends. After two months of learning basketball, I began to like it. Then, I started playing basketball in high school as part of my school’s team and I’ve been playing ever since. It started out as just an activity, and then became a hobby that’s something fun to do but later on, I found that I really like basketball.…
