I interviewed my mentor, Steven Estrada about his differnet views of and on leadership. Steven is a proffessor at Cypress, he follows through with office hours, apart of a lot if committies, dvises the student club, and is a mentor for numerous programs on campus. Steven also has a Masters Degree in American Studies and went to Fullerton Community College and California State University of Fullerton. He believes leadership is about leading by example and also by listening and observing.
We briefly spoke about John Maxwell’s book, The Five Levels of Leadership. We talked about how candor is about freely expressing yourself. My mentor says, “ Candor helps to connect with students, be honest about life outside of work, too much candor in a relationship or amongst family is not good. Candor has its pros and cons and is situational.” We then later discussed caring. Caring is actually feel for someone or something. Steven (Steve) says caring is what got him here. He cares about the success of other and to get them to think outside of the box. He believes that he cares too much at work and that could leave your vulnerable at times. “Position is the lowest level of leadership - the entry level. The only influence a positional leader has is that which comes with the job title.”

Some times it’s good to humble yourself and just sit back and listen and learn. If someone tells you that you should take lead, take honor in it because they see something in you or about you that you might not even see yet. Don’t take lead for its incentitives, do it for it’s actual value. My personal experience with leadership is similar to Steve’s, you don’t always have to be the leader. I always wanted to be the first to say, “ I’ll do it” or “ I’ll be in charge.” When I got tired of it, people were still telling me to take the role. That must be how people see me, as a

Leadership is defined as being a leader of an organization or a group of individuals. To me a leader is someone who will give their all to accommodate someone in obligation of assistance. A leader doesn’t give up on hard task and pushes to be an example for their peers. I have demonstrated my leadership in and out of school by being a responsible, honest and hardworking individual, who expresses empathy to help those who didn’t think they could achieve a goal on their own. While in high school I have been in multiple extracurricular activities such as Drill Team, FBLA, FCCLA, Student Council, Class Treasurer, NHS and Yearbook.…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

During this weekend, I can say that I experienced all three levels of communication. It is something that at first, I did not realize that I was being that particular way. During the course of my day, then I would realize. For example, the I-It communication level is something that I experience everyday and I’m sure we all do. When I pick up my coffee, when I buy clothes, and when I walk into a store etc.…

There are multiple ways I am a leader within my community. The main way I lead my peers is through sports. I have been on my different teams; volleyball, basketball, track, and softball have all given me the opportunity to build my character and to lead by example. I was the volleyball team captain for my junior and senior year, so many of the younger girls were looking up to me. The best way to lead is by your actions; I would always go hard in practices and games to show the underclassmen that in order to get the best results, you need to give it your all.…

There is not one set definition of what a leader is, there are generalizations for a set definition but a leader means different things for every person on this Earth. Leadership can be exhibited in various ways. Learning to be a leader takes many years of experience and is always a learning process. The persons that I chose to be my ten leaders are individuals who I think have had enough experience to become the great leaders that they are today. Most of them have made such a huge impact in their careers to the point that they are considered legends at what they do.…

I believe that the purpose of ILC is not to create new leaders, but to develop individuals who have leadership capabilities and foster a growth that matures them as people both inside and outside of leadership positions. Students in ILC already have leadership capabilities, since they are in ILV. Everyone had to apply for the village and was accepted, so everybody is already, to some extent, a leader. ILC helps students understand what leadership truly entails and fully realize the the power of potential and individual choice. It will prompt students to go out of their comfort zones and delve into new concepts and ideas.…

As a Veteran myself I actually embody this type of leadership approach Servant Leadership is the “team” approach. I wouldn’t ask anyone of my subordinates to do anything I wouldn’t do myself, no matter what service or section we are in we all have the same mission and that’s to help fellow Veterans in need. I receive my care at the VA and I’ve served in six (6) services from Telephone Operator to Administrative Officer so I have a full 360 degree view and assessment from Veteran receiving services to employee serving Veterans I think that gives me a unique insight to our operations. I emphasize streamlining workflow processes, and implementing the e-government initiatives, here is an example of that mindset.…

Today, our modern world seems to value leaders more than well-rounded students. And this makes sense- our future CEO’s and entrepreneurs all have to be leaders, in order to inspire growth and innovation in their colleagues or fellow students. I believe that there is nothing more important than being the spark that ignites others’ inspiration, to later guide and motivate them to pursue their passions and common goals. In that sense, I am a leader- not because I give orders, but because I start movements that pull others into the current, where they collaborate and reach targets that they previously thought were impossible.…

Introduction “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi As I reflect on my leadership journey, I become more convinced with Vince that leaders are not born leaders, but are a result of a conscious effort to be one. While serving in various institutions in leadership positions, I have seen myself emerge to those positions through my hard work and skills rather than just having been assigned to it. Various factors like experience, training, mentorship, conscious practice and even failure have contributed in developing my leadership abilities.…

Being leader doesn’t mean being the boss of everybody, that’s a completely different thing. Leading is actually working with the people and going through everything together, you don’t watch them do everything while you tell them what to do.…
