Personal Narrative: The Fishing Team

Improved Essays
Hello Mr Large, or as some of us call you, Senor Grande. While at Marmion I’ve had a fantastic experience. Part of that great experience has been the Fishing Team. The Fishing Team has been very beneficial for myself in so many ways. Its not only improved my fishing abilities, but has given me a better understanding of myself I don’t think I would’ve been able to find at an average school. You have been a major component of this realization. This realization has come about by nurturing of traits I knew I had, but never had the opportunity to use. I learned that very cold windy tournament last year with JJ that I had the mental rigidity to endure even the toughest conditions. With no gloves and numb fingers I still gave it everything I had.

My family consists of my parents, older brother Patrick ( now a sophomore at Madison), younger brother Declan ( now a sophomore at MUHS), and my younger sister Nora ( now in 8th grade). We were all there for this trip just younger. On our trip one of the main attractions we stopped at for a few days was at the Grand Teton National Park in Jackson Hole Wyoming. I knew Red Lobster was a bad option. I wanted to go to Outback Steakhouse, but mom had her way, even on MY high school graduation. I was stuck, sitting in the booth, waitress staring at me for 15, 16, 17 seconds now. Sitting in my cap and gown, she asked again – “where are you going to college?” I’d prefer the Bloomin’ Onion to this any day of the week.…

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…

Marine Science has always been a particularly fond past time of mine. Ever since I was the mere age of three, while sitting in a bathtub, I had an inseparable fascination with the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. From the otherworldly giant tube worms situated on volcanic vents, to the serene basking shark meandering through the current, all of it showcased the diversity of the world beneath the surface of the waves.…

I acquired knowledge and skills when I earned a spot on the swim team at Sarah E Goode STEM Academy. I have been waiting since my freshman year for my school to have a swim team. Then they finally got one my senior year. Even though I am not the best at sports, including swimming, I had to be on this team. I tried out and I barely made the team.…

It was October 16, 2012. I was in seventh grade, just a boy to become someone or something. We were loading the bus with our two coaches, Coach Voss and Coach Larh. Coach Voss the offensive coach who liked to make us run, and coach larh, our Defensive coach who taught me everything I known about the defensive side of the ball. This was a big game for me and my fellow teammates this game was going to set the tone for the rest of the season to show that we can be successful.…

“Put some meaning into your words,” said my chorus teacher as apathetic faces and idle mouths stare back at him“ A folk song of this magnitude should not be sung with such a light heart”. My ears tune into the dissonant voices surrounding me slowing interpreting the lack of passion already evident to my teacher. Subconsciously, my eyes and head slowly move downwards trying to shield themselves from the wave of indifference flooding my class. As I open my eyes, I am met with the gaze of the words boldly printed on my sheet of music - Wade in the Water. My thoughts are delayed as the urgent words capture my attention only to be interrupted by a piece of my reality.…

As I woke from my slumber, the warmth escaped my body as I left the bed. I got up to brush my teeth, the cold toothpaste touched my already shivering teeth. I looked in the mirror, my reflection showed the scars I had from all the struggles from my hunting food for my family. I try and help my family by making sure they are safe and that they have all the essentials they need to survive in these harsh conditions. I usually find these “essentials” in the garbage.…

It was cold the snow was blowing it was just getting down to the last minutes of the season. It was my first year hunting and I had just missed my 3rd deer for the season about to call a quits for the year when my brother Tylor calls my dad and says there are a few doe below the barn we hop in the truck and drive down. We ran over along the fence row only 8 at the time and using a 280 remington it was a pretty big gun for me. I was resting off a fence post that was taller than I was I seen the eight deer out in the field line my crosshairs up on the biggest doe and ka-boom she started stumbling I shot one more time and she dropped.…

My swim team has an honored tradition of shaving their heads the night before the district swim meet. Districts is by far the biggest meet of the year where all swimmers attempt to break personal records and qualify for state. This shaving of the heads promises a possible time drop of maybe one tenth of a second and also builds a sense of team unity. In 2013, my freshman year of high school, I refused to partake in this sacred ritual.…

My previous camping trips I have taken in the past years have been memorable and full of hardship. I consider myself a very outgoing and adventurous person, that is why I go on crazy trips. Canoeing is my preferred way of traveling when touring lakes and rivers such as the Boundary waters and the Flambeau river. Major disadvantage of canoes is that they weigh up to 85 pounds. The weight matters being when crossing land to get to the next lake the canoe goes on your shoulders to carry it.…
