The next day it was sunny with slightly small clouds all over the palace that looked like big white pillows, it was a perfect day for the beach, but the only thing was that it was sixty-four degrees outside in the middle of summer this was the most cold I had ever experienced. The cold air felt like little pinches all over my skin. When we all got to the beach I could not believe what I was seeing there were huge orange lobster all over on the pebbly, sandy ground. I wanted to get one of the lobsters, but there was a sign on the beach that had a shoe and circle with a line through it no shoes where allowed when I took my shoes the sand and pebbles felt like little cold marbles on my feet. Later that day we went to a restaurant that had all types of seafood I was not a big fan of sea food so I ordered french fries and a salad. My parent ordered lobster, when I saw the lobster it reminded me of the people in Phoenix when I saw them angry their steaming red faces, in a way similar to the lobster. The week was almost and it was time to go back home after one last visit to the beach something we did not have in

In this excerpt from A Summer Life, Gary Soto recounts a memory from his early childhood. As he walks through his memory, Soto recalls the effects sin had on his still developing mind; however, looking back as an adult, Soto realizes that the root cause of his naive fear was his Catholic upbringing. Soto satirizes the Church in an attempt to prevent the perpetuation of the overbearing “Catholic guilt” on younger generations through the use of this powerful anecdote. From the beginning of the excerpt, it is quite easy to see that Gary Soto was raised in a Christian household. He states that he “was holy in almost every bone” thereby implying through hyperbole that he held a very extreme point of view when it came to his religious purity, yet he gives a caveat with the word “almost.”…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

During April of 2015, I stepped out of the car and onto the beach for the first time in Destin, Florida; the salty sea stung my nose as I breathed in a refreshing breath of briny air. The first step onto the sand was like a bed of blankets; soft and comfortable. The way the white sand glided onto my feet and squished between my toes felt like heaven. The waves were singing a delicate lullaby, pulling me closer to them. As I walk towards the ocean with the warm sand beneath my feet, the cold waves lap at my ankles, as if they want to take me away.…
