My coach had told me to take the shot during the timeout, five seconds had been on the clock at that point, almost an eternity. Out opponents had gotten so cocky, when they scored to take the lead with 8 seconds remaining, their bench had run out onto the court forcing the referee to yell at them all, delaying the game. You know, I wish my coach hadn't picked me to take the shot. I’ve never done well under pressure. In high school I had to take the SAT three times in order to

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

One of the first videos that I watched on your channel was your playthrough of The Beginner’s Guide last summer. I started watching it a couple of hours after midnight and I did not once pause it. I remember feeling closer to you than to any other person in the world that night. I experienced stronger emotions than I had in weeks or maybe even months throughout the entirety of your play through.…

What would you call a "thing"? Would you call it any random object you have seen or perhaps something that is a little more important than that? I have owned many objects in the short 16 years of my life from a shiny, pristine, and lightning fast bike to stylish Nike running shoes to a flat-screen HDTV, but few objects have ever truly transcended the line of being an object to being a "thing". Bill Brown's explanation of what makes an object a "thing" would be something that had a profound impact or some major significance in someone's life, in this case my own. That being said, the Holy Grail of "things" in my life would be my PlayStation 4 due to the fact that I love video-games, it was a major surprise to me when I received it, and finally it has genuinely gave me great satisfaction whenever I play it.…

My oldest and favorite foster brother whose name was Eddie, took me and Lajon, my foster brother, downstairs to the basement of our house for a very important “life lesson”. The teaching on that day was, “How to defend yourself”. I don’t remember any physical altercations before this day. I also will never forget this day.…

The Future The frequent question asked by students is: “What would my future be like?” Well, today's society has become more challenging as the years pass, and “education is becoming the number one passport to the future”, as Malcolm X once said. The speech that Barack Obama and Harry Kim made about education being important for the future and the countless lectures that Mr. Thoma drilled into my head had me feeling the elation of my entire life. I feel the perseverance to not let my community and my family fall in disappointment.…

I look to my right at my opponent who has just finished his speech and sits back down with a smug smile on his face. I glance at my paper where I jotted down swift notes during his speech. The clock is ticking as my prep time comes to an end and an idea rings through my anxious state. I add a couple more counter arguments while I try to find a loophole in the core idea of his case. The timer rings, ending my preparation time, and I stand up to begin my speech.…
