Personal Narrative: The Field Of Medicine

Decent Essays
Every field of medicine is extremely important in its own way and that fascinates me but one of the best days of my life was the day that my nephew was born on April 9, 2014. It was such a beautiful, breathtaking experience. A life, no, a baby breathing in oxygen for the first time; the sounds of their screams throughout the hospital room. The light illuminating on their pale pink skin, it's something that I'll never be able to forget. I knew that some people would've been horrified at someone delivering a baby but I couldn't find that emotion. All I felt was overwhelming joy of experiencing something, so timeless. My stomach exploded with a million butterflies and in that moment- I knew. I wanted to be able to bring someone else that same happiness. …show more content…

I want to be that one-person that gives someone else's relative similar emotions that I experienced at fourteen years old. Becoming a doctor, in general, is a noble profession but that isn't the only reason for me wanting to become an OB-GYN. I don't want to pursue a career for greed and wealth but for hope and happiness. It's just the one reason that has made one of the biggest impacts on my life and who I am as a person. Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…

Our health care system in this country is a joke! First of all, the title is misleading because healthy people don 't need doctors and medicine. They should rename it to sick care, because that 's what this industry is. It 's filled with sick people, looking for help from the "experts" only to get shoved pills that don 't work, get their symptoms masked, and get procedures they don 't need all so the industry can profit. A client of mine is a hospital administrator at a large hospital and we were having a discussion about why hospitals are so expensive and he summed it up like this, "medicine is a business, just like any other industry.…

I originally began my pursuit of medicine because of my interest in the sciences. As I explored various fields from psychology to public health, I found myself drawn to working with local hospitals. Following a few months of volunteering at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, my first experience witnessing the birth of a child significantly impacted my decision to pursue medicine. It was a quiet Thursday night, but the Labor and Delivery unit was bright. Working with the nurse to prepare for an emergency C-section, I held the patient’s hand as she was given an epidural block.…

Throughout the life I have lived so far, I have realized that something about me was not the same as “normal” kids. For what I have to say is the medical culture I live with in my life has taken me a long time to realize that I am not like those around me. You may look at me and see a strong and healthy teenage girl, but deep within I am struggling. Struggling not to get sick, not to have an allergy attack to whatever mother nature has to offer, not to have an asthma attack at any given moment, and struggling not to itch my skin so it will not rash. These are my every day battles that I face and with them all it gives me great fear.…

I have a passion for the science of medicine and for providing care. While it was initially my interest in science and biology that prompted me to enter college as a pre-medical student, my experiences volunteering in the medical field have strengthened my conviction to become a doctor and have shown me how rewarding the field of medicine is. I have worked in clinics as well as emergency rooms and have observed doctors and patients in both settings. I have seen how through the help of a caring doctor, patient’s become at ease and how a patient doctor relationship can become a strong bond that lasts for many years. The doctors that I have worked with have inspired me in my career goals and I believe that medicine is the right career path for…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me. This sickness made it impossible for me to see a positive future, until the day I stopped calling myself “crazy” and began to grow from what we all call, depression.…

My journey with Public Health started with a bad luck: when I was small, I often got sick. Every such time, my mother took me to the city hospital, which was three kilometers far from my house. I still remember we wriggled through a horde of patients and their relatives in the lobby and waited for hours just for a quick check-up. By that time, I used to ask my mom why we would not go to the Community Health Station (CHS) – a primary healthcare facility – located just a few steps from my house? As she told me that there was no doctor there, I promised myself that I would become one and work in that Health Station to take care of people in my neighborhood.…
