So, he was familiar with people coming to him, asking if he could help them with a case. He wasn't used to having the perpetrator request for him to solve the case. A hand runs through silver hair. Victor sighs and frowns at the screen, eyebrows furrowing. He thought he was in for a peaceful month. Yet, the senior detective remained, having to solve a case that he had no clue where to stop with. Once the detective was out of earshot, a soft voice pierced through the silence. "Don't worry Mr. Nikiforov. It's clear you're having some trouble, so I'll leave you a few hints about who I am." Upon speaking, the figure slinks off through the shadows, cutting through nearby

These are the stories of heroes and villains, manipulation and deceit, and sex and betrayal. As the second largest subgenre of detective fiction, the private investigator welcomes readers to peer into a world of crime and violence. Unlike the glitz and glam of the amateur detective where murders appear neatly wrapped and topped with bows at the doorsteps of wealthy countryside estates, the acts that take place in the “private eye” genre are ones committed with brutal and unrelenting violence in the alleyways and side streets of a city suffering from a pandemic of corruption.…

I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

This course has demonstrated how we can incorporate a literary detective’s sometimes unorthodox methods of deduction to solve the confounded mysteries in our own lives. These fictional tales of reasoning can be applied outside the world of crime because the methodology is sound enough to put to use in everyday situations. Straying from the straightforward criminologist story to instead feature realities that had been left buried, the element of truth shines. Not only are Roger and Bernard aficionados of historical truth, the third—and perhaps most notable point of view—inspector Cadin, surpasses his role as policeman to also transition to a seeker of uncovering the truth of the past that had been concealed. The further Cadin travels into this mystery, the more he brings the past to present. In following with the expectations of a detective novel, there are times when Cadin receives bogus leads (p. 73), fails to follow procedure (p. 113), or flat out abandons the case at hand in pursuit of the bizarre heist at the height on the mystery. Throughout the story, we are rarely given the chance to breathe.…
