Personal Narrative: The Emergency Room

Before this night, I had no real experience with shocking events. It was a typical night in the household of a five-year-old. My Dad was in the family room soaking up all his favorite sports shows, my Mom was in her room reading a book, and my sister Elise, was playing in the living room with my fuzzy tan stuffed bunny. But what I didn't know is, that I was going to the Emergency Room (E.R.) later that night. I walked down the stairs of our newly built home, trying to escape the boredom of my room. I noticed that Elise was playing with my stuffed animal; moving it up and down and twirling it in the air. She was in the middle of the living room which contained a brown leather couch at one end. Carefully walking into the living room, …show more content…
Still determined, Elise took hold of the bunny's ear and pulled the opposite direction. My grasp on the bunny's leg was absolute, but the bunny's ear started to slip out of Elise's hand. And finally, the ear escaped Elise's grip and I shot backwards. I tried to put my arms out to land, but instead I hit the corner of the wooden leg on the couch. *Crack* The pain immediately shot up my nerves to my brain causing me to scream at the top of my …show more content…
That was one of the first times I heard my Dad cuss; he was terrifying when he got angry. The look on his face was frightening, but all I could do was lay there and cry. I heard my mom rush down the stairs. Elise started explaining what had happened to our mother. My mom thought that I had a dislocated my elbow. It's a common childhood injury called Nurses Elbow that had happened to my sister several times when she was younger. It was decided my dad would hold me down while she tried to pop my arm back into its socket. After a couple of tries, things were not any better, and the possibility of a broken arm seemed more and more likely. It was decided that a trip to the Emergency Room was the best thing to do. Besides the occasional sniffle from crying, I was silent the entire way to the Emergency Room. The quiet in the car helped me to calm my nerves. After we arrived we entered the hospital and the strong smell of disinfectant filled my nose, it bothered me, it reminded me of illness. Other than the occasional whispering of nurses and coughing of patients, the waiting room was silent. A nurse wearing rose colored scrubs and a stethoscope around her neck walked up to

During a four hour visit to the emergency room this weekend, I was able to observe many different people. Since we had such a long wait, I was able to watch, listen, and record different people around the room. I never realized how informative a trip to the emergency room could be. Most of the people looked miserably sick or miserably worried which is what I expected; however, I was able to focus on a woman that accompanied her husband and his grandfather to the emergency room, and continued to observe her for about three hours because they ended up in the curtained room right next to ours.…

Ever since I was a little girl the hospital was my least favorite place. The hospital smell and the stark decor was unappealing, I have always had an aversion to needles, and at a young age, I had a number of traumatic medical experiences within my family. When I was first born I had trouble breathing as a result of a hole in my heart; when I was 3 my mom’s car was struck by an 18-wheeler and she was in a coma for a number of days; I contracted a respiratory infection and had to be hospitalized with an IV and a paddle taped to my arm; I watched my great-grandma Rosie pass away in the hospital when I was 5; when I was 9, I went to get my blood drawn at the hospital, and a scary nurse with long, pointy, red nails held me down while she searched for the vein to draw the blood; and there was a fateful trip…
