“Here is your medicine”, the nurse said as she walked into the resident’s room. Working in a nursing home I hear this phrase all the time. Even as a nursing assistant, I hear it every time a nurse comes in to give a resident medicine while I am trying to give care to him/her. I used to think that a nursing home was a happy place that all elderly people went to when they retired; however, as I got older I realized that I was wrong. Elderly people need help because they cannot take proper care of themselves. I have always wanted to work dayshift, so when I received the chance to observe one of the dayshift nurses I could not resist. It had changed my mind about all the dayshift staff dramatically.

As the residents that eat in the dining room were eating, it was time for the nurses to start going on their lunches. The nurse I was shadowing took the first lunch, meaning I got to go and eat. By this time I was starving and ready to eat. I went to Arby’s to get food, I sat in the parking and ate while I watched family members come in and out of the building. Taking residents with them and bringing them back. As I walked back into the building I got wrapped up in the smell of bleach once again. When I walked back onto the unit the residents that eat in the room were getting ready for lunch.
