Personal Narrative: The Dog Who Changed My Life

Ever since I was a little girl I always enjoyed dogs, but what young child didn’t? I never realized how much one animal could impact someone’s life until summer going into my freshman year. A good family friend asked me if I could help her out with a pet adoption event because she was short-staffed. I have always loved volunteering and I love dogs so it was a no brainer to say yes. Once I arrived, my friend started going over the protocol with the animals and giving me their background information. This one was found abandoned in downtown Atlanta tied to pole, starving; the other one shakes because he was abused when he made a mistake or made a mess , and that pit bull in the corner just looks mean because his ears were clipped and he was raised as a …show more content…
They showed me how even though things get tough and hard, not to give up because someone or something will come into your life and make it better. I know it is weird to say this about dogs, because they cannot talk, but they spoke to me when I worked with them. They were always so happy, when they came from so little. It gave me a huge prospective on my life and how I need to make sure I am doing as much as I can for those who need it. I bonded with the Releashed Rescue group and they became my second family. It was so nice to be able to be with a group of people once a week where we all are wanting to help others. I was able to help several dogs get adopted with their new families. It also taught me how to say goodbye in a sense, I would create a bond with one of the animals for weeks on end, and then they would get adopted. It broke my heart saying goodbye to them, but I knew that they were going to a better place and were going to live a very happy life with their new family. Dogs deserve way more than we give them, because no matter what we do or who we are in life, they will always accept us and love

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

It was hard to remember the dog Seeley had been before she became ill. A happy girl with curly, silver hair that relished each morning and delighted in each night. We knew she had been through quite a lot in her life, telling from the moon-like cataract clouding her left eye and the swollen nipples that hung lowly from her stomach. She enjoyed cuddling and seldom barked, but did often make weird scoffing noises when she was excited. She was our baby.…

Just checking in to see how your dog duties are coming along. I hope Emma is healing and that Diesel hasn’t eaten anyone yet. Our Foster dog almost died, was diagnosed with either/both leukemia and a stomach blockage of some sort, and then made a full recovery. We had a chance to have him put down, but I decided to give him more time and brought him home from the hospital with a prescription for Prednisone, which was expected to extend his life by maybe another 6 weeks. He’s in his third week now and, other than the shaved legs and belly, seems perfectly normal.…

Rough Draft We walked down the aisle passing by cage after cage, listening to the deafening sound of hundreds of dogs barking. Cheryl, the vintner coordinator, tried to tell us about some of the dogs, but with the amount of noise all we could do was nod and pretend like we understood. I kept my eyes open for dogs that would be fun to walk after our orientation. And out of the corner of my eye I saw a ghost of a dog.…

Topic: Adopting and Rescuing Animals Specific Purpose: To persuade my effective speaking class the benefits of adopting a pet over buying one from a breeder or pet store. Central Idea: Adopting animals and rescuing is much more beneficial than buying an animal from a pet store because you won’t be unknowingly or knowingly supporting a puppy mill, you will be saving an animal’s life, and you will feel better overall in the end about rescuing your new pet rather than buying. INTRODUCTION Attention-Getter: According to Humane Society of the United States organization’s website I accessed on December 6, 2016, “Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and…
