This morning I was driving down the street when the traffic light turned red and I stopped at the light. While I was waiting for the light to turn green I looked to my right when I noticed a man holding up a sign saying “I’m homeless, anything will help”. I felt that I need to do something when I saw him smile at me so I gave him a couple of dollars so he can buy himself a nice meal to eat. I know I made a difference that day when I put a brighter smile on his face and I fed a hungry

The homelessness number is at a staggering number 578,424 people (as of January 2014). As of January 2015 the number has come down to 564,708 people. Only a decrease of 13,716 in over a year is not enough. Some say that such high numbers are caused by drug abuse or misguided entitlement programs. Some believe it’s the cause by lack of funds in social-service programs or failure to create a economic opportunity.…

How to Survive on the Streets When I lost my job, I was forced to leave my accommodation and became homeless in a matter of minutes. With no family to turn to, I ended up on the streets. Having lost my job due to misunderstanding (I think my job was a massive homophobe), I was unable to pay bills and rent, leading to my eviction from my apartment in 2013. I felt bad for him and asked Jennifer, my sister, if we should give him some food. She says yes, so we stop at the gas station right in front of us.…

Something simple as giving those water bottles, and PB&J sandwiches makes their heart jumps, and here we are with food, shelter, and yet we still can’t be content and be happy. I always dreamed of helping those who didn’t have it as good as I did because I always knew, that if my dad lost his job then that could be me and my family. Even looking at myself now and being blessed enough to stay with my sister when I know that I can’t stay with my dad due to his wife or with my mom in Montreal due to immigration reason, this could have been me, on the street begging for food, for shelter and lost. However, even with all these things people are still searching and feel as if they’re lost and have nowhere to go, but I believe that God’s plan for each and every one of us is perfect. And I believe in his good thoughts for us and good plans for us.…

I’ve never been able to decline help to someone in need. I always put everyone else's needs before my own because when I sacrifice myself in order to put a smile on someone else’s face it gives me peace. Contributing to a cause to make the world a better place is worth the sleepless nights. When one is passionate about helping people it won’t matter to them how long they have to go without food or how tired they will feel at the end of the day. Just this week, I’ve had several occasions where I gladly gave up my time to do people favors or help someone in need.…

My parents relocated my siblings and I from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to San Diego, California in order to allow us to lead a prosperous future. Unlike children in Guatemala, we were presented with an excellent education in San Diego and indulged in learning. For as long as I can recall, discovering new facts and learning new things about the world fascinated me; consequently, I quickly began wanting to help others in their pursuit of learning. I was always the first to offer help to my struggling peers and would stay behind during recess to assist them. My acts were fueled by the desire to see students succeed and I would do anything to help them prosper.…

During my experience of feeding the homeless around my city, I chose to go to the first neighborhood I’ve lived in out of several. As I was taking in the nostalgic scenery, I motioned towards a man who took shelter behind a dumpster. Not wanting to startle him, I kindly greeted and offered him one of the many pb&j ’s I had prepared earlier. “I don’t want your goddamn sandwich, I’d rather eat Mcdonalds,” he said harshly, assuming I was helping him out of pity and not the kindness of my heart.…

It's not always true that your best friend shares the same values or beliefs as yours. In fact, my best friend saw the world completely different than the way I did. While I made choices that I thought were right regardless of how others felt, he made choices that were right by his moral code. They were still wrong choices, at least in my past opinion. While he had something of a moral compass that helped him decide what's right and what's wrong, I was simply straight and logical.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
