Personal Narrative: The Day I Learned To Walk In The Woods

Improved Essays
Here is the story of the time I learned to hike a steep hill and learned to belay, a crazy day. It was humid in my house so when my friend Isabella M. asked if I would go hiking with her family on Hise MTN., I obviously said yes, it would be my first time hiking. I packed a backpack and begun the walk to her house. We hopped into a car and began the drive to the mountain. I sat down and looked around another little girl and my two friend’s dads had joined us too, the girl’s name was Raegan. I looked up, that mountain was ‘as steep as a cliff’. It was going to be tiring and I imagined hiking down wouldn’t be the easiest. We stepped out of the car and began the hike. About halfway up the mountain my feet began to hurt, much like the …show more content…
Security guards showed up soon after that. They told the two dads that were with us that it would take both of the two security guards to get her down… So it was time to belay. Our dads stayed on the ground as the guards rapidly put on their harnesses. Soon they were climbing the wall. Our dads started to sweat as they pulled the heavy security guards up the cave walls. Soon the girl was safe on the Ground. After that we went back down the mountain. It was like rock wall climbing on the way back down the mountain. Once again we used the rope, but in a different way. The adults cut the rope into several two foot pieces and gave us each one piece. They told us to use it on the way down to grip onto tree branches to insure we did not fall off the mountain. Once we got back to the bottom of the mountain we got back in the car. That’s the day I learned how to hike up and down a steep mountain, what belaying was and how to throw a disgusting tuna sandwich off the side of a mountain. I had a very enjoyable time that day. It was mostly tiring though. Though the day was tough I knew that I would soon hike Hise MTN. once

Our counselors had to scope out where our campsite was, which they finally found by a exquisite blue lake. It felt so good to empty our packs and stretch. After waking at midnight to start our summit in order to beat the possible rainstorms, we were off to climb Mt. Massive, the second tallest mountain in Colorado. Climbing rocks with heavy backpacks, crossing rivers, bushwhacking about 3 and a half miles, and dealing with heavy winds that almost blew us over, we finally found the trail!…

We tumbled down the mountain slipping and sliding in the darkness we were moving with a purpose with new found strength and motivation we pushed on. We took our snowshoes off hoping to make better time by just sliding down the mountain rather than walking. As we approached our first river crossing I set down my pack and realized I had lost a snowshoe. Somewhere up the mountain I had dislodged it from my pack and before us was miles of deep snowfields that were totally impassable without snowshoes. Weighing in my predicament I knew this could totally end our chances of having banana bread tonight.…
